Title: HELP! Adjusted clutch, now bike dies when I shift to first
Post by: jwjulian on March 30, 2009, 10:19:02 AM
I followed the instructions on here, and from the Haynes manual to adjust my clutch and now I can start the bike in neutral, but as soon as I shift out of N (to 1st or 2nd) with the clutch handle pulled in, the bike just dies....

Any help please?

Yeah, same thing happened to me the first time I rode to a gas station. Had never put gas in a bike before and couldn't figure out how that would keep it from shifting :icon_confused:

Spent 5 minutes crawling around the bike like a squirrel trying to diagnose what was wrong before remembering the kickstand

DA U BABY now that's a school!

All right I'll ask nicely! Where you riding at in Fl?
I've been meaning to ride up to Gainesville to a little church in Lake City called Hopefull Baptist. When I was going through heart transplant eval at Shand's some people from that church took me in when I was discharged in severe heart failure and unable to make the 3 hour trip home. There are some good people up there but Shand's sucks A$$.. Getting shocked with a defibrillator while awake sucks!

Bring the hate TooGoofy - it's easy to hate the best!  :flipoff:

All kidding aside, Shands does fall short in almost all aspects. I've heard some real horror stories about them. Luckily I've been able to avoid being in that hospital at all. I did do some damage to my MCL and meniscus, but was taken care of by UF's athletic doctors and they took great care of me.

I'm currently up in Gainesville until June, then I'm moving to Atlanta.

Glad you're ok after all that heart trouble. I can't even imagine what it's like being "jolted" whilst awake. Geez!

Also, just as I had everything adjusted, I pull my clutch lever and *SNAP* - there goes the clutch cable! But, just had to go to the cycle shop and pick up another one, put it in and adjusted everything back and now it feels like it rides better than ever - clutch doesn't slip at all, clutch bites much earlier and more responsively and it's much easier to pull the clutch lever to engage/disengage. Woohoo!

When I got my bike I didn't yet know that I have to put the kickstand all the way up against the sidestand switch after the ignition is turned on or it will shut off when I put it in gear.  The stand was up, but it shut off three times.  Then I realized I had to move the stand all the way up against the switch to set the relay, which is higher than the stand at rest in the up position.  Then the damn thing would run!  I think a bird saw me, but no one else!

Haha, definitely makes for a not-so-quick getaway.

I'm glad I figured it out quickly, because I was about to start trouble shooting other spots like clutch and such that would have made me feel like a real dumbass if took apart the clutch...

And it actually makes more sense now too with the sidestand relay because I was noticing that sometimes when I was stopped and ready to park, I'd put down the stand and then engine would die - I kind of liked it, then sometimes it wouldn't. Now it makes sense that I was in neutral when I put it down and it didn't die. Thank you Suzuki - I felt like a moron for about 9 minutes!

What a great safety feature though. The sidestand kill switch has saved me from trying to take off with it down more than once.

Yup, I think we've all done it at one time or another. I got sick at my GI docs office and one of the office staff had her husband park the bike in the garage. Well, he parked it in gear and I couldn't get it to start. My ride had already left and I was freaking out cause I didn't want him to get too far away and need a jump. There was no way to get his car in I'm trying to push it too weak. Then he comes to push it and puts it in neutral  :icon_idea: literally. I'm like wait let me try it now! Boy he was pissed that he had to come all the way back.

hey man if you guys wanna do some riding hit me up I'd like a good long ride. Maybe we could meet in the middle and go from there!

+1000 My dad got a nasty road rash in his older BMW without a sidestand switch.  He noticed the stand down after taking off and was trying to put the stand up (on his own street at fairly low speed) and dumped it.

you did that in front of a GF, and were ashamed? so read that:   I did that in front of a DMV officer on my Road Test......  :flipoff: :flipoff:
I passed....  as soon as I realized what I did, I fixed it and made sure that I was looking like I knew what I was doing (checked my mirrors again, looked over my shoulder, and pretended that nothing has happened)

it saved me when my mate went to take off on my bike. He tried to play a joke on me and went to take off shoved it in gear and it cut off and he was so ashamed.

I love the safety feature on the side stand, but when i was changing my clutch lever i snapped the tooth off the switch and left it on the closed position so it still works.
