Title: Sorry need to vent....Lost my job a week ago!
Post by: utgunslinger13 on March 31, 2009, 04:17:43 PM
So last tuesday I was pulled into the bosses office after work and told that they were making budget cuts and that I needed to be let go.  No warning to look elsewhere and wrap up anything I'm working on, no severance package although he was quick to point out that he wouldn't fight me applying for unemployment and would pay out some of my future commissions.  So now its been a week, and the only places that want to actually talk about bringing me in for an interview are health benefits outside sales positions which are mostly a scam, or a shitty car dealership internet sales position that wanted me to work 60+ hours a week for minimum wage plus commission?!

Then today I get a call from the unemployment office, and because my past employer used an outside payroll company my application was being denied because their records show I was being paid by the payroll company and when I filled out my application I put the actual company that I worked for!  So the lady actually told me on the message to attempt to call her back but she knew how difficult it was to get through so we can file a new application with the necessary changes.

So instead of spending the last 2 hours looking for a new job, I've been trying to get though to the unemployment office.  I either get a recording saying that all circuits are busy so I need to try again later, or I get an automated message from the Unemployment Office that they are experiencing heavy call volumes and can not assist me at this time.  In the 2 hours I attempt to get through, only 1 time did I ever get more than 30 seconds into the call without being told that I needed to try later and that time I made it 5 minutes into the automated service, put in all my personal info and was told that they were busy and I needed to call back.

What kind of shaZam! is this?  These so called programs to help tax payers end up causing more of a burden than they actually help!  And how in the Fu-cK am I supposed to even pay my rent on $240 a week?!  How can they justify paying 1/7th of your weekly salary and think that will help?!

AND to top it all off, I found out that they brought in a new employee today for a different division?!  So they would rather bring in a new sales staff and pay to train them while hoping they get up to speed than keep someone who was working with 15+ employees on my desk and billing on avereage the 2nd or 3rd highest in our division for every week in 2009 all while in a recession?

Doesn't make sense to me, so :2guns: my old boss.

I know how you feel. The pricks have been giving me a runaround on a job due to being a bunch of racist and I just had to start going to a nother office. Oh and due to me having a lifting limit they claim I can't work so I may not get any unenployment  :2guns: So I said well if I can't work and can't get disability then WTF DO I DO ???

I HATE THE GOVERNMENT  :2guns:

Stop limiting yourself.
If you're not married, then stop complaining.  No need to get bent out of shape over a crappy job.
If you're married, then she can help you buy books.
Got kids?  All the more reason to study harder.  Think you'll be the first?

This is the type of crap that happens when you trust authority.
So, either become the authority or stop crying when you get screwed.
Not to sound holier-than-thou, just trying to spur you toward something positive.

Are you smart enough to put yourself in a position to be respected, or are you gonna go around begging for it your entire life?

Well, that's my speech.  It's over now.  Everybody go home.

Besides, now's a great time to go to school.  With all the layoffs and everything, you know.
Of course, you could get lucky and find a great job with the same pay and benefits.  I'm not saying you won't.

Or, you could start from the bottom again, or somewhere close.  So, why not go to school?  It's pretty much the same thing.  Plus, you get to (hopefully) avoid the worst of the economic problems.  If you find something that you REALLY love to do (which college is great for), then you won't need to worry about job security.

Money-wise, it's not so bad.  There's the FASFA and school loans.  Summer internships pay pretty well.  If you're a good student, then the university will give you research or lecture assistant positions during the school year.  They pay pretty well, also.  Part-time jobs are very plentiful (and give you study time, if you pick and choose).  And, I can give you tricks to save close to a grand on books each semester.
It's only really scary at the beginning.  Then you see that you can make it, and that you're getting better grades than the younger kids.

Of course, if you'd rather be able to buy motorcycle parts whenever you want....

i had the same thing happen to me 3 weeks ago. It sucks my son is 7 months and his formula is expensive cause of his stomach issue. So I decided to go to school then take the fire Academy. Great job but then I hear The govenator will be closing some of the fire Houses cause they can afford to pay all them. :bs: The police academy is another option but they do credit checks and mine is shot to Hell. so what do I do? IDK

So what did you do that you made over 6k a month??  I'm just curious.  I make good money, but not quite that so i'm curious to the field you are in.

You'll understand the sentiment, then.

Where did you work?  Dunder Mifflin?
Guess you've got to get better at selling yourself to your boss, not just your product to your sheep.  Or go to grad school.
I dunno.  I'm not so great with situations where you're forced to be nice to people, like marketing.
In fact, I've reached my quota for being nice, as I speak.

I'd say good luck, but, you know... quota...

hahah in that same aspect (at least based off other posts I've read) I'm assuming your in the medical field, so you should get a taste of it with bedside manner.  I can see that getting old QUICK lol and then you being like Greg House on House lol

I think I might have misled you if you read that I made 6k in a month, the unemployment is based on quarters.  Because I made over 6k in a quarter that maxed me out lol.  I wouldn't care what my job was if I made 6k a month!  :icon_lol:

EDIT:

I just reread my first post and it should read 1/7th my BIWEEKLY pay check lol

Because, mach, your state is so far beyond broke from supporting illegal immigrants and giving them better health care than tax paying legal citizens can get that 'the governator' has to beg the federal government to help him out while my governor is saying 'f%$k all you communist pricks, I'll eliminate my states defecit without wasting taxpayer money' and getting f%$king trashed by all the low life libercommunist shaZam! stains that wouldn't know a hard earned 6 figure income if it beat them in the head with a f%$king Maserati which they'll never be able to afford because how dare they f%$king have to work for something in life and the government doesn't pay for Italian sports cars yet.

I moved here from Kommifornia in 1989, bought a $70 bus ticket, packed 2 gym bags with clothes, and had enough money to buy a burger and a tuna sandwich on the 48 hour bus trip. Pack what you can in your car, explian your situation to the finance company and go someplace where the economy doesn't suck and you can find a job.

Theres enough people all across the country on this board that if you said hey I have a job in so and so can anyone help a brother out with a place to crash till I get a few checks under my belt I bet you might find that help. I know most people think I am an @$$hole which is fine by me but I believe in charity. You find a job in tulsa and you have a place to stay for a month or 2 plus garage space for your bike. It's a couch in the living room on weekends but on weeknights when my son is at his mothers you can use his bed. Don't mind the pitbull and the boxer they're friendly.

I tend to insult people when I answer that question, because the question is an insult in itself.
As I'm sure Ut is aware, the problem lies in saturation (and, as always, sycophancy).  Evolve beyond the muck, or find a different pool.

And, that's really as far as I'm gonna go without starting a pissing contest (as much as I'd like to...).

Have you looked into technical writing?  Not quite your field, but the transfer is simple.  And, it's booming, believe it or not.  There are quite a few firms that would be interested in someone with a marketing background, to open up new avenues.
Maybe a switch to PR, but, granted, it's iffy.  Saturation, again.
Or start a local firm!  Kinda sounds crazy, but tons of local businesses are pushing to get their name out in the public eye, nowadays.  Granted, it'll be a while until you see a return...
Hmm.. I do wish you luck.  Wish I could help.  I hate seeing people lose their jobs when they're good at what they do.

Mach, have you been down to talk with the FD's?  Get their point of view on things, and get some work-out advice while you're at it.  Looked into EMT work?  Hell, a month-long class for EMT-B will set you up with a $40K salary, and that's just entry-level.  They're always needed.

What's your degree field, Cafeboy?
Why do we have such a populated forum, and very little help to try to find these guys a job?  Stop the crying!

I have been an Auto Tech for 13 years. I have gone to UTI and am a certified NC state inspector, ASE Under Car Specialist, and Forklift driver but I had back surgery and have a 35-40 lb lifting limit. That's not enough to make me disabled but I can't work on car any more either.
Oh and I have a wife, a seven year old, and one due in July.

That's tough... let's see...

The guys at the DMV might like you, the guys that inspect VIN numbers and such... But, that probably requires law enforcement training...
Community colleges might like you as an instructor, but who knows how many other guys are chomping at that bit...
A guy like you, I'd say to go to seminary, but you might not have the inclination.  And, probably not the time.

The Cummins plant in Rocky Mount would probably take you, but I only think of that because I've worked there.  The training is paid, and you'd definitely get along well with them.  Don't know where they'd stick you, but they're not allowed to lift very much.  Machines do the hard stuff.  I don't know about other industries around your area.  Usually those type of places have a rotating pool of temp-workers, and they like to see permanent staff.
Hmm, my Dad is gonna be in the same boat soon.  Mucho mechanical experience, but a burned-out body.  He's been looking for a new job before he gets fired, trying to switch to employee relations.  He's now the ombudsman of sorts, handles employee complaints.  Works out well, since he knows the equipment and such that they're arguing about.

Weren't you the guy saying that your shop gave you a position at the sales counter, at 1/2 the pay?

I'm obviously not a decent career advisor (I only know what I know) , and you've heard me say this before (but it worked for me):
Technical Writer
Got me past the military-to-civilian gray period, and would be paying me very well if I had stuck with it.  You know that big Airbus 380?  I wrote the mechanical manuals for the 1st-class seats on those.   They don't require you to have education, just mechanical experience and a mental spatial ability to see parts fit together.  (And lots of patience.. you sit on your butt all day.)  It's a kinda boring.
You just gotta find a writing group willing to train you, and most of them will.  They work their ass off, usually, and need the help.  No need to be really computer savvy, if you can understand looking at page after page of parts.  They'll teach you the rest.
You've used parts manuals before, with exploded diagrams and numbered parts lists before, right?  That's the thing I'm talking about.  It's easy.  Write or edit a little manual, send it to the editor, get a $900 check, repeat.  Takes less than a week for a small manual or just an edit, and obviously more time for a bigger one.  The small easy ones get sucked up by the guys with seniority, though.  (Unless you're working on salary, not per manual.)
A lot of times they'll let you work from home, once you've been trained in the software, but not always.  And, once you've been trained, you can go freelance.  A guy I knew in aerospace did that.  Wrote his stuff from his desk in Ireland somewhere.

Sounds like something you might be interested in?  Let me know, and I'll make a call.
How'd you like to work with those armored Buffalo vehicles the military uses, down in Charleston?  They were practically knocking my door down, last year.  Last I hear, they're developing a new vehicle, now. They'll need people.  And, I know a guy in Winston-Salem that was begging my wife and I to work for him a few months ago, I think he's still hiring.  Really nice guy, he'll train you.  Does all sorts of government bids: web development, you name it.  He's got a big network; he'll know of other groups or a way to get you into it.

Hey Cafeboy. You may want to try going to Vocational Rehabilitation. I am currently going through this process cause disibility doesn't pay enough and I really want more than just squeaking by. If you can no longer do your job due to disability they will pay for you to get your schooling. It is worth a shot right! In Fl we have a bit of a back up but they are trying to get me back on track with school in a couple of months.

Here are the numbers to the ones near Gastonia NC
Gastonia
(704) 853-5358
(704) 853-5385
1-877-282-0757
109 W Eighth Avenue 28054

Gastonia
(704) 853-5436

   1550 Union Road - Suite B 28054

You can call but your best bet is to probably walk in. They will schedule you a intake session which is about an hour explaining what they can do to help you! Hope this helps!
Mary
