Hey guys,
my brand new 2008 is still under the break in period(around 400 KM) and i'm doing it by the book meaning not reving it over 5500.... I just noticed today while riding to work that the bike seems to be faster!!!
Say before the 400kms, if i was on third gear doing 60km/h, the RPM would be at around say 4500 but now it's sitting around 4000 and still doing 60km/h .
Can someone please explain ? :)
Don't know about that, but I just bought a brand new 2008 as well---as of today I only have 120 miles on it.
Welcome to the "New 2008" club!
Rick.
Eh, lots of reasons that could happen, probably nothing important. Road quality, tire pressure, inclines, wind, other vehicles, rider position and a whole bunch of other things will determine how much power is required to go a particular speed. As long as you're not slipping the clutch or anything like that, it doesn't matter. Also, stop staring at your tachometer and watch the road! I know you're trying to do break in correctly, but you should be able to tell how fast the engine is turning by throttle position, feel and sound without looking at the gauge all the time. Once you're past break in, you should be able to pretty much never look at the tach without effecting anything other than your ability to set the idle or diagnose other potential problems with the bike like vacuum leaks...
Paul, you're getting used to the bike. That's all it is, and welcome to the board!
The relationship between actual speed, rpms, and the gear you're in will only change slightly as the tires wear. Not enough to notice, especially over a span of only a few days. As your front tire wears, your speedometer will overstate your actual speed by an increasing margin. As the rear tire wears, your rpms will increase slightly for any gear and actual speed.
Man, I can't remember the last time I stayed under 5500 rpm! :thumb:
Yes your bike will go faster as soon as you break it in further, but it will take about 4000+ kilometer before it is run in properly.
doing it according the book is a good idea, I did the same and in return ( now at 17K km's at the gs 500 e ) it is not consuming a drop of oil, no bother looking at the level, oil is transparent and clean. average gas consumption 1 : 23 km's.
so really breaking in takes much longer than according to the book, I had a Fazer 600 from wich a Friend of mine told me that after 10k kilometers its starts running like it should, and he was right after 12K it really loossened up,. I run 30 k on it before I sold it,.. and no bother looking at the oil level,..
enjoy!
Pete
Hey Guys, thanks for the replies, they all make sense :)
@Fred, i'm still not used to the bike mate, i only look at the dash from time to time just to make sure i'm not over reving it, I used to rev the crap out of my old ZZR250 to move in third and besides the weather is sooooo crap at the moment in Sydney i can't really hear anything other than thunder,wind,rain.... :icon_sad:
@toyopete, i think that's it, i'm getting used to the bike and it's loosening up a a bit at the same time.
PS: i'm loving the comfort on this thing, it's great :D
Cheers guys
Did you add air to the rear tire perhaps? Or maybe losing air in the front?
Hey Paulcet,
no i haven't touched the bike at all. I'm just checking the oil on it from time to time !
Cheers
