Title: Just bought gs500e, need some parts and help!!! :cookoo:
Post by: ken99287 on April 02, 2009, 06:51:12 AM
I am new here, I just bought a 94 gs500. The bike has a little over 3k on the clock. It is in ok shape, the carbs have been removed and taken apart and pieces are missing and it's just crap. Other than that, it's all there minus the mirrors and the choke cable is stuck. Does anyone have a carb they don't need? How much do you want for it ?? Mirrors? Choke cable?? There are patches of surface rust all around the bike, should I take some steel wool to it? Are these things fun to ride(do they have enough power)?? How comfortable are they for long rides? I'm planning on making a ~350 mile trip every other weekend(that's about 700 miles RT). What kind of mileage should I expect from it? Are there any simple, inexpensive upgrades to do to the thing? Please let me know, thanks a lot!!!

I this the one from CL in Virginia?  3k miles is great, btw.

I would clean up the rust and touch it up to stop spreading.

Mirrors are everywhere - check ebay for napoleon bar ends if you have to.

If no one has the parts lying around go to bikebandit.com.  They'll hook you up.

Carb clean and rejet $45 parts and labor + return shipping.
Choke isn't stuck right, just cable - K good.
You can clean and jet yourself - stock bike runs good with 125/40 1 washer and 3 turns on screws, I sell a jet pack as well and you can buy these form local bike shop too.
Cool.

I'm positive it is... I went and looked at it, wasn't into the work it needed. Be sure to have a good look at the weld on the right side of the frame at he top, sort of in the middle, rust looks like it made it's way pretty far in there. Great project bike though!

Dude didn't answer me at all.  I just straight up said I would take it.  Eh... I got one.

Did you see the Buell Blast for $2300 - ?  That's not bad either.

He answered me pretty quick, it isn't in too bad of shape, to be good it will need to be taken down a restored though. I saw the Blast, I like them but the GS is better looking IMO...

OP: EBAY has every part you will need to make that bike 100% I already checked, lol. Have fun with it, it is a fantastic project bike. Oh, and just rebuild the carbs, they didn't look too bad although I didnt take them out of the bag to look at. Did he find the key?

yes, that's the bike. I was the second person to email him, he had something like 30 different emails about it... The first guy went to the ATM and didn't come back. Anyways, there are pieces missing from the carbs - mostly the screws which i can find. There is a manual, but the pictures aren't too great and i'm having a little bit of difficulty fitting everything back together. It's mostly back together, but the parts have corrosion on them anyways. I think I might buy a good used set of carbs and just clean it real good. I think any 10mm screw in mirror will work, right? The tank is in suprisingly good shape! no dents, a couple tiny scratches that should buff out. Just the choke cable is stuck. The key is at his ex's, he's getting it to me soon. The engine turns out to be a rebuilt from a different bike, but he says it has similar miles as the frame?? I don't know. I'm just looking forward to getting the thing running. So.... nobody has carbs??

There was a set on Ebay, I can't remember what they were going for though... Be patient, they are out there... Maybe Buddah can help you out with a set? He is the resident Carb man from what I have gathered. I was the ATM guy, I lost my card at Chili's just before we went to go pick it up didnt know untill I went o the ATM, found the card today, lost my job yesterday, lmao. I love life... You have a great project on your hands though, should be tons of fun.

How a bike with 3,000 miles on it gets rusty in Virginia I'll never know, but it sounds like you have a nice easy project there, congrats!

Don't buy new carbs.  They're expensive, and Buddha can make yours good as new for cheap in less time than it will take for you to get the rest of the bike straightened out.  Buy used carbs from someone else and you don't know what you'll be getting and you may end-up needing Buddha's help anyway.

A can of WD-40 will solve your cable issues and I think every household in America has one.  If they don't, they should, and it's only $3 a can.

With so few miles you shouldn't have to worry about any problems with the engine, wheel bearings, swingarm, or suspension.  The bike is practically new!

Age can ruin tires.  Check them for signs of dry rot and replace them if they show any.  You DON'T want a sidewall blow-out at 60mph.  That would wreck your whole day.

And welcome to the board!

assuming it's the one from CL here, it has NO carbs.  Was $300, so he can buy carbs and stay out ahead.

I'm a little saddened that the guy who got that great deal (posted for $300 - no shaZam!) is a polygamous bike-whore...  He's got a smaller one (250 ninja) and a bigger one (didn't he say fzr 6?).  I'll get over it... eventually  :D

He had the carbs in a bag in pieces. Complete minus the bowl screws. And no, not fzr, zx6r, that's another ninja. Other than some rusty spots on the frame, the it seems to be in good shape. No dents in tank, plastics are ok.

The most gorgeous 650 nighthawk I actually sold to this idiot friend of mine ... who put on 30 miles in the first year of owning it, and its never moved since.
I've had 4 of em, and a 700 last year. Cool bikes.

NT hawk 650 ... muhahahaha ... hahahahaha Nighthawk is a Nighthawk CB650SC. In line 4 cyl with hydraulic valves and shaft drive. Its a great bike in its own right with the 700 being the holy grail of the series. Though some people dont care for the boxy styling.
Its the mount of choice for the serious milers, that along with the 550 was somewhat of a semi cult ... similar to the Hawk clan, except this cult isn't ghey.
Cool.

Yeah, my cousin has one that he's selling, but I don't want to pay what he's asking, haha. If anybody is interested, it's on Philadelphia Craigslist. It has something like 15,000 miles, new tank and battery. Screaming eagle exhaust(??). Small tear in the seat, runs and drives great(I've ridden it around before, it's very comfortable). I want to get one that I can put rediculous miles on, and not have problems with. I actually almost bought a 2000 vulcan 500(or was it a 550??) a couple weeks ago. It just needed the carbs cleaned. It had 4XX Miles on it. That's right, four hundred something. The guy bought it and tucked it away in his garage. he was asking 1500... Of course, somebody beat me to it. Actually, like 50 somebodies.  >:(  So now i'm stuck with a project! Well after I get my carbs sent out to the BuddhaMan, I just need to track down a set of mirrors, do oil change, check brakes, forks... stuff like that, and I can test it around the neighborhood. I am looking for a set of tires, I think I'm going to settle for a set of Kenda 671's - any info on those?? any other rubber recommended for going the distance??  haha. I did find a great price on Maxxis Supermaxx fronts for the bike. They want $40 and free shipping on brand new 110/70/17. Pretty good, I say. Any size recommendations? I was thinking of 110/70 in the front and 140/70 in the rear, how's that sound??

A GS will comfortably out last all of the listed bikes at a far lower price. Its actually cheaper to run than nayhting else around if you remove tires and chain+sprokets from the equation.
The nighthawk, 500 vulcan etc come close, but they are more work if they break down and more $$ to get parts for due to the lack of the gstwin behind it. very very very few sites stand up to the gstwinners in terms of parts circulation as well as expertise.
Vulcan 500 clowns consider it as having done it yourself if you personally hand over the keys to the service manager.
Not here. If you say you rebuilt something in gstwin, 1 you'd get a million questions, and 2. Someone would invariably ask, so you replaced all the metal in the crank ... No then how is it rebuilding.
Aaaah OK you replaced the bearings ... and O rings. So its a bearing swap and an O ring job. So you dont get people who're full of shiete.

Anyway your carbs will get back soon - I am yet to get it, tommorow is deathly cold I aint stepping out the house, but thursday/friday sat look good.
Cool.

Sorry it took a while to get some pics uploaded.  The glass is in good shape with a very small hairline scratch you can barely see.  The exterior of both mirrors have some scratches from the previous owner's lane-splitting escapades I presume.  Other than that, a very usable set of stock mirrors.  $15 shipped to continental US and I can ship elsewhere if needed but please pm for S&H quote.
