so my petcock has gas "residue" on it and is starting to get a brownish rustish tinge to it. Is it just a bad petcock? can you 'rebuild' these things or do i need buy a new one?

I'm not sure what you mean, but it sounds like you suspect your petcock of leaking. I also assume you mean the frame-mounted petcock and not the one on the underside of the tank. These vacuum-operated petcocks have no replacement parts available from Suzuki, but you can open them and work on them if necessary. Usually they do not need service for many many thousands of miles. Generally the complaints are torn diaphragms, and/or fuel starvation (not enough throughput) at high rpm.
Unless you know your petcock is leaking, or you suspect an internal problem, there should be no reason to open it. If you do open it, it can be converted to non-vacuum operation. Search this forum for "Jenya" and you will learn all there is to know....

sorry yes, that was a terrible post :dunno_white:
its the frame mounted petcock and yes, i think it's leaking.
I'll look into the non-vacuum operation
thanks!

I converted to a Honda CRF450 manual petcock. It's got on/off/reserve. No more vacuum problems and works and fits great. Just have to grind a hair off the mounting tab.
The brownish tinge is suggesting to me you may have rust in your tank.
2 oz. of Marvel Mystery Oil in each tankful prevents rust, as well as several other nice benefits.
