Title: clip ons.... what to do with upper triple tree
Post by: guitarking135 on April 06, 2009, 09:44:54 PM
so i' have clubmans now and I am really considering spending a little and buying some clip ons. for those that have them like the vortex where did you mount them top or bottom of the upper triple tree and what did you do with the old handle bar mounts. my idea was to take them and grind them off and repaint it or something any thoughts? and like always pics are great

I put my clipons above the top plate.  As to what to do with the old bar mounts, I plan to get a polished aluminum plate to mount over top and have it engraved with my initials or the suzuki 'S' or something like that or possibly create a different top plate to mount the guages to.  My thought is if its ever dropped or something where the clipons are broke or bent, at least you can always put the old bars back on until replacements are obtained, so thats why I'm not gonna ditch the old mounts.

I've got woodcrafts I should be installing this weekend, I plan on mounting them below the triple but I'm gonna have to fab a new headlight mount as the stock one doesn't allow enough clearance. I also plan on keeping the stock plate and not grinding them down, if anything I would find a second one and grind that one down. Good luck with your build, I'll try and get pics up when I'm done with the bars.

I think it was mach1 that just install a set of clipons under the top triple and made a post about a few days ago with pics.  I think it came out that there was a bit of rubbing or the levers had to be tilted up a bit which I myself would find uncomfortable.

The top of the triple tree where the bars mount does it have alot of pressure on it? Would there be any reason I couldn't take that top section off and make a plate maybe chrome. to put on top of it? cause if I remember right there is two pieces to that top portion.

From what I can tell, looks like the only pressure comes from the bars.  I've thought about doing the same thing if I can find the time and resources.

I have an 07 F and put my vortex clipons above the triple.  If you havent read about it yet you just lower the front end a little and put the clip ons on.  Its pretty simple.  I kept the top plate for the stock handlebars and will get a plate made for it sometime soon.

See if you can get more info about  "lowering" the front end, I've heard this affects handling, I'm sure someone can elaborate......

I should have new brackets made today for headlight an will hopefully have clipons for my '93 done tonight.

I couldnt tell much of a difference but if you have ridden your bike constantly for a year or so and already know the way it feels then you will definitely tell a different.  its not hard to do, my suggestion would be slap them suckers on and see how you like it.
