Title: problem with rpm meter
Post by: Bluehaze on April 08, 2009, 11:27:53 PM
I have slowly noticed that my RPM meter is acting weird intermittently.    the weird action is that is bounces between rpm range..  example..   in the past it used to be smooth..so if you riding and the rev is at 6k.. the needle will be on 6k or around.. if it goes to 9k same thing.. needle is on 9k and wont move until you rev down..

Now  the needle jumps  between 6 and 7k just back and forth very quickly..  does the same thing when you go higher rpm.. between 8-9k.    This does not happen all the time but is consistent enough that i noticed it..     should i be worried? >:(

The only thing i can think of is the whole gauge area is now more susceptible to vibration.  Where as before, nothing was touching the gauges except for the 2 screws its connected to on the bar.. but i put on new bars.. and it has caused the gauge to be stuck between the brake reservoir fitting..where the hose goes into it  and the handlebar.. since it is squeed inbetween these two.. what vibration the bar has.. gets transferred to the gauges..   However since it happens intermittently.. i am not sure that is the culprit.

What year is the bike? You either need to lubricate your cable if you have one of the older style mechanical tachs or you need to check your electrical connections if you have one of the newer style tachs. Should be a quick and easy fix.

What year you got again. I've got an 04 and it did the same thing. Just started doing it's own thing 2000-9000 rpm back and forth back and forth! The dealer replaced cause it was still under warranty. They couldn't figure out what exactly caused it but replacing it solved the problem.

Sorry it didn't help much but that is what happened to mine!

Yeah, than do that. You've probably got a bad electrical connection somewhere. It should take the dealer mere moments to fix, assuming they have whatever part you need on hand...

Took me a week to get mine back! So, be prepared!
