Post by: FViller on April 09, 2009, 08:37:59 PM
What's going one guys.? I bought a 1996 GS500e from a guy who owned in from 2000-2009. He bought it with 6,000m on it and honestly seemed like the guy who WOULD keep up maint. on the bike. It runs perfect; just cosmetics are bad from him having to keep it outside...anyways just introducing myself and thanking everyone for the info Ive already absorbed!! ...Oh Yeah...I might have some dumb ?'s in the future....just giving you all a heads up! :icon_twisted: Anyone in NW ARK (fayetteville?)...Oh ya...how bad is 38,000 miles? 1st 4 years it only accumulated 6,000 or so...

Welcome, congrats on the new ride. My gs was a '96 too, best year imho.

If the bike is well maintained (mechanically) you could expect 50-75 thousand or more. I know gsjack has put some serious mileage on his gs's.

My '94 has 88,000 on it and still going strong. Keep it well maintained and you'll be fine.

Actually ... 96 was the first year when everything went to crap ... However you dont get to 38K with everythign going to crap ...
You need to keep an eye on the oil level - @38K i was going through a quart in 400-500 miles.
You also generally are looking at a rebuild ~50-80K unless you ahve been exceptionally lucky, my 48 K bike was seriously down on power compared to a young un. In fact I can tell the mileage just by the power it has when I ride it. I'd not worry too much, but a rebuild could be in the future for you.
BTW hope you paid an appropriately low $ for it. My 48K went for 650 and other than the miles it was in very good shape, with a large number of Buddha special parts (fork braces, pipe, Kat shock, K&N, case guards, 2 weld bars, Kat grips and many many more cool parts)
Cool.
