New(ish) user is saying hi!
I have worked with this little project since i bought it last fall. All I thought to do was change oil and wash it up but due the long and cold winter, I decided to pump it up a little.
The bike is 1992 GS500E, having about 50 thousand kilometers driven roads behind. My first bike ever. Not a rocket but altogether satisfying machine to chill the brains for the hardened brick who drives a car. Was cheap and good.
The starting point:
(http://img14.imageshack.us/img14/636/img02661w.th.jpg) (http://img14.imageshack.us/my.php?image=img02661w.jpg)
---
Little modding, dual headlights and raising tail four inches:
(http://img25.imageshack.us/img25/5113/11112008168.th.jpg) (http://img25.imageshack.us/my.php?image=11112008168.jpg)
(http://img18.imageshack.us/img18/1968/15112008170.th.jpg) (http://img18.imageshack.us/my.php?image=15112008170.jpg)
Tail was raised only by raising rearfairings and drinking lots of beer. No Good. And dual lights looked so common... Needed something more.
---
Then I found cheap tail from Yamaha R6. Was bargain:
(http://img24.imageshack.us/img24/8663/15012009227.th.jpg) (http://img24.imageshack.us/my.php?image=15012009227.jpg)
Ain't so easy to fit that tail around. Needed lots of anger, (more) beer and Dremel. Fitting fairings from other bike model sucks, I can tell. Also I made seven millimeters shorter dogbones to rear. Made rear raise and better feel to handle.
Polishing rims:
(http://img6.imageshack.us/img6/3696/03022009273p.th.jpg) (http://img6.imageshack.us/my.php?image=03022009273p.jpg)
(http://img6.imageshack.us/img6/2615/17022009283.th.jpg) (http://img6.imageshack.us/my.php?image=17022009283.jpg)
Waiting for the spring was tiring. Decided to polish my white(ish), rough and ugly rims. Had very psychedelious times with paint remover, long nights with sandpaper. After three weeks of hard wanking I become satisfied (with the rims of course, think this metaphor works better in finnish than in english).
---
Red-blue-white-whatever-coloured bike undressed her fairings and sent them to the painter.
(http://img8.imageshack.us/img8/5071/13032009293.th.jpg) (http://img8.imageshack.us/my.php?image=13032009293.jpg)

Must say, ifyou have couple of hundred euros hanging, spend those euros to paint your darling. "Colour Your Life" may sound kind of a ghey but this is a exception. Worth of every eurocent. Makes hellofa change on old bike.
---
Spring was coming, so it was time to mount a new headlight (slightly modded Polisport Alien). Also removed rev-counter to wait for the time I find something smaller, maybe some Koso- meter.
Never finished but always on the run:

Ride on fellows!
...and sorry for my bad english :dunno_white:

very creative very nice work,. a bit bigger or more headlights would look nice,.
teh wheel are magnif,.
I really like that rear end, very sporty and surprisingly fitting, although a bit rough up near the tank.
Nice work, I like the tail!
that's awesome work there my friend. Never apologize for your English skill, it is excellent. Congratulations on a fine machine!
Thanks for the comments fellows. Can't imagine any headlight that suits better than that... Any suggestions?
It's morning and lovely springweather here in Finland. I'm about to hit the road. See ya later.
Looks tidy - but I wouldn't sacrifice my rev counter. Have a look at CZOKO's solution (bicycle speedo in original rev-counter)

I will put the rev counter back in place when I get my digital speedo calibrated. It's just a simple bicycle speedo I'm planning to fit. I'll work it out tomorrow and upload more pics.
Love those polished wheels, and your English is better than most of ours!
Where in Finland are you from? I'm an Aussie but my wife is from the Oulu area. We'll be back there in July for the summer :)

I'm from southern Finland, 40 kilometers from Helsinki, 500 kilometers from Oulu ;) But you are welcome to come visiting if you find yourself cruising nearby :icon_razz:
Today I re-installed old gauges. It was annoying to drive without rev-counter. Now it looks kinda crappy but maybe soon I find something betterlooking. Painted the frame matt black and put some foam plastic to tighten gauges up.
Also installed spoiler over the gauges. Hides gauges very well when you look from front but when you look from back, you see those old fashioned pieces of history.

It was nice, though cold day to drive around. Drove couple of hundred kilometers. Temperature was only +2,5 celsius when I came back a moment ago. Goddamn I am frozen.
Couple of pics more:

New rev/speedgauge and takkon exhaust is still coming on... Some day.
great job. very very nice.
Very nice work! And your wanking metaphor seems to work OK in English, too.
Question, What's the thing in this pic, with the wire mesh over it and zip tied to the electric harness?
which seat did you have to modify to work, the r6 or gs?
great job.
I love the tail piece. :thumb:
Rickyz, it's a simple cover for starter relay and fusebox. Pure handmade crap, should I say.
Seat is r6 seat I shortened a bit. I'm suprised how comfortable it is. Better, and bit higher, than original GS seat.

Not a bad idea, but dont know if there are so many GStwin enthusiasts in Finland :dunno_white:
I think I have counted 3 GS500 owners at .ORG (popular finnish motorcycle forum, note to foreigns!), including us :icon_mrgreen:
Gotta love lanesplitting with that license mount? But that's one way to hide the hideous thing. Only see it from one side.
Hey, is that a shark helmet you have, and a rsr2 absolute?
I just bought one but am afraid the whole buy online thing is going to screw me. Size wise. Anyways, how do you like it?
It's Shark RSi, I think. Cheap, good and very good looking. About a year old now and sits as tight as new. It's little bit noisy but it's not a big deal.
License mount is barely legal. Just waiting for the police to pull me out:)
Nice bike :icon_razz: try go for digital tach from vapor.

Nice bike :icon_razz: try go for digital tach from vapor.
I really like original, mechanical tachometer. It's kind of race'ish :bs:
Instead I need new speedo. Current one doesn't have light and it's detached, free to steal.
Like your bike's tail KIMI, from what bike it is?
Some brake update:
(http://img197.imageshack.us/img197/6852/04062009414.th.jpg) (http://img197.imageshack.us/i/04062009414.jpg/)
It's a brake disc from GSF 1200 Bandit. Fits perfectly without any mods. It has bit larger area for cooling than the original disc.
Was cheap too...
Today I changed smaller front sprocket 16T -> 14T.
It's now like new bike, takes 100mph easily (even when sitting normally, no need to go to egg postion) and acceleration on 6th gear is amazing.
Also drilled two 10 millimeter holes in back cone of the muffler. My tiny little gs sounds now "GS with Barry White in it" O0
It's amazing how little mods can make so much.... :woohoo:
Hey, the bike looks great. I swapped an R1 tail on mine as well, but yours looks WAY cleaner. Did you figure anything out for a good undertail? that's where I'm stuck on mine at the moment.
I have to say I liked the dual headlights better, but I just have a thing for dual headlights. Are they the dominators? What did you do to mount the seat cowl on the back? is it actually brakes to hold a seat, or did you just attach the cowl to the tail?
I tried a bicycle speedo once, there was too much lag when you were changing speeds, and they're kinda iffy at higher speeds.
Good job!
Took couple pics from that tail:http://img294.imageshack.us/gal.php?g=26072009503.jpg (http://img294.imageshack.us/gal.php?g=26072009503.jpg)
Try to figure out how it's done...
Undertail is original R6 -04 part.
Seat cowl is removable and it is also possible to use passengers seat on same mount. I don't think it can take passenger on because there are not any special support under the seat/ cowl.
I've been searching for better looking headlight but still haven't found. Black dominators, maybe...
I like my bicycle speedo, shows exactly the same speed as my GPS. Go for a Sigma meter.
I liked. It's nervous. Nice work!
:thumb:
Drilled third hole to exhaust, sounds superb. Like god farting trough saxophone.
I strongly commend.

-ahven- One of nicer mods I've personally seen to the GS. Love the polished rims. It's hard to get a good perspective of them in your pictures though most pictures are in over cast. Love to see them in the bright sun light :thumb: . I saw the outer part of the rims polished the other day by jrains89 for the first time and I loved them, now I need to decide which I like better!

I'll take better pics for you soon, mate. I just have to clean up those wheels, they are quite shitty at the moment and also have to wait for that sunny day for perfect pics. Maybe I have time for that tomorrow on my workplace.

Beautiful job, nice work! :thumb: But I must say, if I rode a motorcycle, which I do, I wouldn't want to be in Finland. Hell, I live in Buffalo, NY and it's more like Miami than Finland! You must have a snowmobile too!
One minor suggestion for you -ahven- is paint that rotor black! What ever possessed Suzuki to make them in gold is beyond me. It took me 15 years+ to paint mine, but the one thing that always bugged me when looking at my bike or pictures of it was how out of place that color is on the bike. Sticks out like the proverbial "Shore Thumb". It's a rather simple process compared to the mods you have all ready made. Because it is a floating rotor there is actually just enough space to fit masking tape between the rotor and the mount. :thumb:
Robert
It's about six snowy or cold months here in Finland. But it only means I have six great months to service and tune up my bike to the max:) And it is also good period for winter sports with my car, long slides on the snow etc. I like it. Welcome to visit any time.
I've been also thinking painting my front rotor black. My vacation starts tomorrow and ends at the end of august, I'll have lots of time to mod my half liter darling.
What kind of paint did you use on your rotor? I think basic spraycan paint won't last long?
I used Home depot krylon gloss black. It's been over a year no problems yet. If you prep it right and clean it real well before painting in a warm temperature it comes out fine and will last 3+ years or more. :thumb:

-ahaven- you are on to something here. I have to say it looks like a different bike with no gold to distract your eye from the rest of your mods. As it sits it looks very impressive. I think the only thing that would accent it even more is a little 1/4 fairing with that new head lamp assembly incorporated into it. With what you did to the rear end seat cowl I think it should be a piece of cake for you.
Quotelittle 1/4 fairing with that new head lamp assembly incorporated into it.

I've been thinking something like 125cc Cagiva Mito's Ducati stylish top fairing:

Could somebody tell me where I can find printable gauge face for tachometer? Original or custom.

On the carbon fiber I did that about 4-6 months ago took it off on Thursday due to it already peeling! Granted I live in Florida and it has been at least 93 every day for the past month!

Does anybody have a clue how to install tacho wires?
Wiring diagram is on the right on first page: http://digitalspeedos.co.uk/DB01.pdf (http://digitalspeedos.co.uk/DB01.pdf).
Not a clue but can't hear how it turns out. :thumb:
Almost done now. It was simple job after all. Now only problem is that the neutral light won't work on new meter. Tested old wires with bulb and it worked correctly. Now it only flashes and only when i put right-hand turn indicator on. Is there any good reason for that? All wires are connected right.

Well when you find one someone is parting out, let me know! I've been wanting one of those tails for quite a while now. I could make a mini version of the classic GSXR1100 streetfighters that have the ducati tail, since the GS frame looks like a mini slingshot frame. I keep an eye out on ebay for cheap ducati tails, but i know it would look huge on the GS.
I know you already bought a new tach, but incase you decide to switch to the old one again... There's a thread a little while back about pulling apart the tachometer. It was filled with a bunch of people flipping out about tampering with a tach, and then at the very end someone finally explained that you can pull the cover off if you pry it a little at a time around the top cover where it meets the case. My first bike had the same thing. The tach needle just bounced around at the bottom of the guage not even connected anymore. After I sold the bike to my cousin he pulled it apart and got it working fine.
I like the look of the rims but I wouldn't want to have to be the one to keep them clean. I had polished rims on a car once and I had to keep them polished or they would oxidize and look like crap. I have enough chores without having to polish my car wheels every couple of weeks.

I opened my tacho and it seems that the magnet wheel insinde is dead. So it's lost. There were some metallic crap inside that has warmed up magnet and made it dead. Wheb magnet warms up too much, it loses magnetic field.

I use Autosol Chrome polish (forbidden in EU, too powerful) and car wax. Wheels keep shining and won't oxidize.

Stick with yours.
Dominators bought! I get them on bike tomorrow or next monday. :woohoo: Can't wait. They are my sixth headlamps so far.
I thought you already had dominators? What are the chrome dual lights on the first page? I personally love dual headlights, but I know they're not for everyone. On the right bike, and if done properly, I think bikes look awesome with dual lights stacked vertically, but they usually have to be stepped back a little, and have to be projectors.
Anyway, looking forward to seeing it with the new lights, I think it'll be an improvement.
I had chrome dominators but I sold them. Too shiny. I think black dominators will look good on my dark blue bike.. New ones are with H7+H4 bulbs so it's nice improvement, old chrome ones were double H4's.
And my present headlight is warming up pretty much with H4, it's originally designed for HS1 bulb. When its coming fall, I prefer more lightpower than looks. Maybe xenonlights next.
First shot... dunno... looks weird.

yeah, they're way too high, drop them down about 3 inches. I know it looks clean with the way they butt up against the bottom of the speedo and hides the cables, but still, it'll even out the front of the bike. Maybe try making a little buell cityX screen to cover if the space bugs you.
Right over the bottom triple clamp is the sweet spot
(http://www.motorcycle-usa.com/photogallerys/DSC_1499web.jpg)
Some improvement:
(http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a28/-ahven-/Muut/th_15082009588.jpg) (http://s8.photobucket.com/albums/a28/-ahven-/Muut/?action=view¤t=15082009588.jpg)
Not a Buell but...
Yeah, that looks a lot better. I'd say they could still go down a little bit, but obviously you're gonna run into problems with the lower triple being there, if you wanted them lower you'd have to move the bracket under the bottom clamp and flip them up, but I'm not sure how that would look. That legs on the GS are just a lot longer below the bottom clamp than the ones on the buell are. I like the headlights though
I found Kawasaki Z750 2008 headlight for 50 euros. That looks awesome...
http://www.fotopankki.fi/dispVeryLarge/720095-Kawasaki+Z750+2007 (http://www.fotopankki.fi/dispVeryLarge/720095-Kawasaki+Z750+2007)
It's like in that link's pic but without any fairings. It's quite wide but I think it will match fine with my tailpiece?
Looks wicked, what do you think?
Yeah! it'll probably look kinda big, but for $50euro it sounds like a good deal. I love the z1000 and z750. If I was buying a new bike from a dealership, that's what it would be. Give it a shot. Even if you don't like it once it's on, replacing headlights is pretty much a hobby for you now, so it'll just give you something to do. Considering the GS is a smaller bike, have you ever considered trying to just mount two vertical projectors? He's making a housing for this one, but sometimes they look good with just the bulbs....
or else just go for something like this....

Is that a streetfightered 636? I wasn't crazy about those bikes when they first came out, but I've been liking them more as of lately. Your bike is looking really good too, you can tell when you park it next to a modern bike and it still looks good.

It's Z750 2004 slightly modded. Nice bike too, unfortunatly it's not mine.
Awesome, that was my first guess, but it looked like the windscreen was bigger than the normal Z windscreens, plus you don't see them in red too often.

It's my friend's uncle's kawa. Good looking, slightly tuned(110 rwhp) bike but it handles like a dead horse when you drive hard. Even my GS is better on curly roads.
I think red Z's are quite common here in Finland and that windscreen is original too.

I'm in love again...
Rejetted my bike and also put on new gasgets on carbs.
Bike goes now like a mad. Old mains was 120's and now I have 127,5's. No need to say that this was best 50 euros I've ever spent (jets 3 euros7 each and repair kits 22 euros/ each). With my K&N drop-in and drilled exhaust, 127,5 main, 40 pilot and needle shim in the second slot from down is perfect mod.
Only negative thing is now that my 14t front sprocet won't like to play with my new powers, bike takes 100mph too easily and engine goes to redline. Should I go back to 16t or buy 15t sprocket? Recommends?
Can you fit any of them on with the length of chain you have? They're not hard to swap, spend a saturday trying them all out and see what you think. Which one gets you the top speed you like?
I changed 14t->16t yesterday. My dealer ran out 15t sprockets, so I have to find somewhere else. I'm confused that top speed with 14t is only as low as 100mph, is it normal or is it just my bike?
A GS500 is never going to get much above an actual 100 mph (110 mph indicated), so its best to fine tune the performance under 100, since that is where you are going to be spending most of your time.
Changed 15t sprocket. Now it's good.
Yup, 15T is the way to go. Still can cruise and have a little more pull in the lower revs. I wouldn't go to a 14T now.
15t is perfect. Bike goes now 158km/h actual speed(GPS on my phone) on fifth gear (~98mph). Didn't have guts to test top speed on 6th gear, too much traffic on highway. Acceleration from 0 to 80 is even better with 15t than 14t because there's no need to change gear so often.
Did my personal record today, I changed my front sprocket, removed tank and re-routed throttle cable and changed spark plugs in 45 minutes. :icon_mrgreen:

Little update. I made new bugspoiler. Material is polyethen plastic, same as used in motocross bice fairings.
It cost me nothing. So can I call this spoiler a bargain?

Also painted motor sides and some other parts flat black. looking better now :dunno_white:
Needs maybe a new headlight? Old one is more than two weeks old :D I think I put that Kawasaki light next...
Take good pictures of the kawa headlight install :thumb:. Someday I'd like to get one of those 03-04 zx636r's to make a mini Z1000 out of, and at that point I can just check out your pictures for the headlight
I made new screen today. It's made of same plastic as the bugspoiler. It's very nice, covers my head from the wind when driving on motorway. And better looking than old one...

Hello again.
This winters project is new rear wheel from gsx-r 750. First it had to be polished like old wheels...
Looks so much wider...
(http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a28/-ahven-/Suzuki/th_08122009599.jpg) (http://s8.photobucket.com/albums/a28/-ahven-/Suzuki/?action=view¤t=08122009599.jpg)
We just bought an apartment and also we're getting married in may so it's hard to find time to mod my precious
But I'll keep you in touch.
New rear tyre, 160/60-17. Gotta luv it!! It's actually 165 millimeters wide. Old 130/70-17 tyre was 125 millimeters so this mod is really awesome.
(http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a28/-ahven-/Suzuki/th_MobilePhoto242010174157.jpg) (http://s8.photobucket.com/albums/a28/-ahven-/Suzuki/?action=view¤t=MobilePhoto242010174157.jpg)
Here is my old tire. Burnt it away.
(http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a28/-ahven-/Suzuki/th_MobilePhoto242010174536.jpg) (http://s8.photobucket.com/albums/a28/-ahven-/Suzuki/?action=view¤t=MobilePhoto242010174536.jpg)
so how does it turn now with such wide tire??
Bike is now more stable to drive. Also grip have improved. Overall, wider rear tyre makes small bike feel a bit bigger.
isn't it slower to turn now?
What I mean is that GS500's big advantage is it's flick-ability (how quick you can turn it) and putting so wide rear tire seems to take this advantage away :dunno_white:
I have to admit though that I like the looks of wide tires :thumb:
PS. Can't wait to put my new Pilot Actives on ;)
Works perfect, better on curvy roads than old tyre. Also it is more stable at higher speeds, today I drove 40 kilometers at 150 km/h and bike was like a train. With old 130 tyre, it was hell to drive higher speeds.
Here's one pic more, me, my bike and a ferry.

Yes you lose agility but it's not that bad. I believe it's definitaly worth the stability you get with it!
thats the sharpest looking gs i've seen. nice work !

I love those SVSs, they're one of my favorite bikes and definitely one of the best looking things out there. One day when I move out of the city and have to commute into town, I'd definitely try to find me one of those as I think they'd make a perfect commuter if it didn't have carbs. I don't have any problem with carbs on normal bikes, but on a commuter I prefer fuel injection so when it's 35 degrees out I can hit the starter button and run back inside where it's warm until it's ready to go, but still, awesome find. How many miles have you gotten on it so far?
Love the rims-
That must've taken quite a bit of "Wanking" heh heh :-p I'm sure several hours if done by hand. What grit was your final sanding done with?
I've read somewhere that (at least in cars) larger tire width does not equate to grippier handling... Maybe that's true in holding in a corner but what you're referring to is high speed stability? Maybe What I was reading was bunk? Maybe wider tires = better handling with motorcycles?
OH and ROFL- Two expressions that made me laugh while reading through the entire thread- "GS with Barry White in it" and " ...sounds superb. Like God farting through a saxophone" I love how the GS sounds...Very quiet. Pleasing to the ear when revving up, distinct, a bit hard to think of something that it sounds like...Like a soft version of what a blender sounds like. haha
Hi theeeeere!
Little bit of update from land of santa claus.
Still having that SV650S, having couple of new mods: twin xenon hid-lights, shortened Leovince etc.
Here's my baby:
(http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a28/-ahven-/th_IMG_0359.jpg) (http://s8.photobucket.com/albums/a28/-ahven-/?action=view¤t=IMG_0359.jpg) (http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a28/-ahven-/th_IMG_0358.jpg) (http://s8.photobucket.com/albums/a28/-ahven-/?action=view¤t=IMG_0358.jpg)
Then came winter and i got one shitty 50cc scooter for free.
Yamaha with broken engine and tear up fairings:
(http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a28/-ahven-/th_74105_1728329413804_1405502374_31874935_5138021_n.jpg) (http://s8.photobucket.com/albums/a28/-ahven-/?action=view¤t=74105_1728329413804_1405502374_31874935_5138021_n.jpg)
Repaired and repainted it, also little made some little tune-up... max speed rised from 30mph to +55mph(fast enough for old granpa):
(http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a28/-ahven-/th_2.jpg) (http://s8.photobucket.com/albums/a28/-ahven-/?action=view¤t=2.jpg) (http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a28/-ahven-/th_1.jpg) (http://s8.photobucket.com/albums/a28/-ahven-/?action=view¤t=1.jpg)
...and swapped that to Kawasaki KZ500 1983 with some old granpa... great deal or what? Kawa have had little mods to motor so compared to old 34kw it now have about 50kw.

That GS looks like a good project. Those are my favorite tails on old GSXR streetfighters. I would've loved something like that on my GS instead of the R1 tail, but it was heather's bike and she liked the r1 tail. The SV still looks great too, looks really sleek in all black.

This is a classic, 1074 GSXR. Its a bloody crime to do this to this bike. Just nearly as bad as putting an estended arm on it.
And I dont think streetfighters are that big a craze as somethign that is related to it - Bobbers. Everyone is building a bobber, they will bob anything, it made sense for bikes that were rear ended, or crashed and damaged the back end. And that lead to every Idiot in town that owns a hack saw to build a bobber. They bob bikes tha twere never intended ever to be bobbed, they bob bikes that are in near mint condition, and worst of all 1 idiot is bobbing a shadow 600, that was in a front end wreck, he bought it for 300, replaced the front end, is working on getting the tank replaced and repainted flat black, from a nice red, but the rest of the bike was green ... and then he's cut the back end and what not before figuring out the entire back 1/2 if that bike is plastic ... and he's putting a trailer fender on it, and leaving a bunch of fugly black plastic under the painted plastic. Yea ... a murdered out bobber. Yea ... cost him near 1500 ... after buying a wrecked 300 buck shadow. WTF.
I'll probably put pics of it when he's done. If I can ever stand to be around that fool.
However one moron has a stretched and polished YZF 600, yea stretched, polished and rusted ... steel frame ...
And another has cafe'd a maxim 650 with 48K miles. That bike started out life with a transmission defect, and the fact that it made it to 48K is a miracle in itself. This fool paid 650 for it, and proceeded to turn it into cafe, has a old ducati cafe tank on it, and yea a big fat 4 cyl motor is just perfect under that skinny duc tank ... yea dumbaxx. And yea its totally worth the 4K you want for it.
Oh yea that's the other thing, after hacking a bike to bits, they try to sell it for more than what the thing would cost new ... :cookoo: ...
You take a hacksaw to a bike, its over for you ever selling it. You are going to take it to your grave. Even the ones that want bobbers wont buy your bobber, they think they can do it for nothing. Its 1000 times easier to sell a bike that is apart than one that has been hacked and re assembled even if it runs.
This bike just has a tail section that was modded, its an unbolt and swap out item, can be reversed.
Cool.
Buddha.

haha yeah man people get really protective of those old gsxrs. I'd rather start with a crashed one, not just to avoid ruining a perfectly good bike, but because it's much cheaper that way. You've gotta fix a bike up the way you want to ride it though. Japan refuses to make serious naked bikes, so the only thing left to do is take a sportbike and chop it up. His bike has been around though. They made those slingshot gsxrs until 98, so it's not like they're all classics.
Finally I gave up and said goodbye to Suz's.
