Title: New GS owner, fuel delivery, fuel line routing, lean condition
Post by: dwkfym on April 11, 2009, 08:58:35 AM
Hi everyone. I sold my kawasaki and finally un-bummed myself from motorcycles. I bought a 95 GS for 1200, 30k on the odo in "fair" condition.
It is in kind of crappy shape. I was able to ride it home from 150 miles away. It died from what I think fuel starvation 4 times, and when I got home it didn't start.
I made a fuel delivery system that did away with the stock petcock using a T-fitting and a lawn mower on/off valve and various nylon barb splicers, and a small fuel filter. I am going to find some hose caps and pegs to cap off the vacuum hose and close the ON nipple of the chicken on the tank, (har har) so I can do away with the stupid T-fitting that is causing all these fitment issues, and run it straight to the carbs.

I had a few questions:
The bike starts, revs up past 4k only after warming up, but runs awfully lean. I can't remember if it ran that lean before I put this thing together or not, but it crackles and pops when i rev it high past 7k as it comes back down. Does this sound like the normal factory lean condition, or does it sound like it got worse?

The hose that goes into the T nipple on the carb is only about 3 inches from the cylender cooling fins. I know gas vapor ignites at only 200 degrees, and I don't know the heat ratings on the hoses. I want to move it back when I get the caps and run just one hose, for cooler fuel delivery (I think it is marginal however), if not safety. However, for now, does anyone know if that is too close? I was looking at factory pictures and it looked like the fuel lines run 4-5 inches away from the said cooling fins.

Ugh. More work to do. Valve adjustment, rejet (intake and exhaust on the way), fork seals, etc etc..

Thanks!

You could have saved yourself all that hassle with lawnmower fuel system parts by just running the bike on PRI then setting it to ON or RES when parked for safety.

When I bought my bike last year it also had a fuel starvation problem.  I used the above strategy but I also have put 2 oz. of Marvel Mystery Oil in every tank of gas in all the bikes I've owned for 30 years.  The problem has vanished.  The problem is caused by the vacuum operated valve getting sticky.  MMO cures stickiness.

I tried to run in on PRI but that didn't work either.  :dunno_black: I am thinking somethnig in the petcock is really messed up, maybe diaphragm being torn or something. The hoses were all old, I wanted to run a fuel filter, so it worked out alright.

I'll try the marvel mystery oil. I used to use them in my KT racing kart after each race, I'll post up if that helps.
