Title: Non gs motorcycle carb question. running lean
Post by: joshr08 on April 11, 2009, 04:55:51 PM
Ok guys as you know ive been working on the vtr for the wife well today i wrapped it up and took it outside.  I started it up and it was runnin pretty rough.  So i pulled the carbs (i know bill not what i should do) they were dirty as he!! so i cleaned them cleaned the petcock and put it all back together.  now she idles like a beauty but while i goto drive it at about 5k it starts loosing power.  so i short shift it into 2nd and open it up at 5k it started to stumble really bad so while riding it like that if i pull the choke it stops acting up and starts pulling like a champ.  Now i just went out and pulled the plugs and the bike is running lean.  So im going to pull the carbs again what should i check once i get them off tomorrow?

I'm not an expert but it seems symptomatic of a clogged main jet(s).

Is your tank full of crud? You could have successfully cleaned the carbs, then immediately filled them with rust when you ran gas from the dirty tank through them... Also, you could have some kind of air leak that is changing your mixture. You don't have a hanging idle (do you?) so it isn't likely to be a vacuum leak, but it could still be a leak between the carbs and filter or a hole in the airbox or something along those lines...

as far as i could tell the tank is clean.  is a weird shape inside and you cant see much inside there.  but i will be replacing the fuel line and putting in a inline filter as well.  before i pulled the carbs i was having some idle hovering but that was found to be a miss routing of vac and vent lines.
