its around 1200 when it stays idling....when sitting still, then if you give it gas it either revs and stays at 3000 or dies out. loading up. im about to give up and sell it

bike did not run we got it going it only has 16,000 miles on it. we are on the 2nd tank  of new gas, just added seafoam. found a few vac. leaks sealed up. should we have just disassembled the carbs from the start. is that what we should do next??? new spark plugs are in it also as well as new air filter....I am a good car mechanic so just learning bikes, I will understand mechanic lingo...so .....      we are lost...

if it was me i would have pulled the carbs and did a good cleaning on them make sure all cables are routed in the right spots so they arent pulling or to tight both choke and throttle cables.  i would also see if you can clean the petcock i havent had the gs one off of the bike but on the vtr i just did the petcock was as bad as the carbs.

Clean carbs well (dont miss any passages), set float height, and put new plugs in again. Petcock is easy to remove and clean.

Dont seperate the carbs while cleaning, just open 1 side at a time top then bottom, get a real fine wire to push out sludge in passages, a single wire from a bicycle brake cable or speaker wire will work . theres a few holes u can easily miss. you probably dont have to remove the jets.

heres a link to a how to

floats are in the bowls, theres a needle on a metal piece that closes the passage when seated, that will need to be checked before you set it.  Use this

when i do my carbs i pull the jets and let them soak in automotive carb/injector cleaner for a while you would be suprized how much crud will come out without even touching them.  i then clean them with wire and/or a super small needle.  if you let them soak a while they will clean easier make sure you can look through all the holes.  through the center of the jet along with all the cross drilled holes as well.

do that test on your centerstand. I set my floats by sight, its just easy for me. i look at the side of the carb with the bowl off. then i move the float to see its action in conjunction with the needle. i then put the seam of the float parallel to the bottom of the carb and adjust the needle tab in which direction it needs to go, usually up to stop the bowls from filling up to high.

I'm assuming you have adjusted the idle screw underneath/ in-between the carbs, if not play with it a bit to find the proper idling spot.

Cleaning out the carbs is a good idea

i was having a similar problem on my 97. it turned out that the petcock wasn't reliably providing fuel to the carbs.

old lawnmowers have petcocks too and after a while the little plastic diaphragm hardens up. if you trash pick a lawnmower and replace this piece, 9/10 times it'll start right up. might be the same sort of issue with the older gs'es.
