Title: Does anyone else paint?
Post by: wladziu on April 17, 2009, 01:56:00 PM
I work with acrylics right now, and I'm thinking of moving to oil.
Abstract and post-impressionism, neo-expressionism, transcendentalism.  O'Keefe, the Spaniard, etc.
Any tips?
The long drying time has me worried, and I don't want solvents in the house.  But I'd really like a thicker paint.  I stick with Galeria acrylic.  Anyone have experience with another brand with a little more substance to it?

On a side note (and this is gonna probably sound snooty):

I just came back from the induction ceremony of my fourth honor society.   :woohoo:
The current list is:
Gamma Sigma Delta
Alpha Lambda Delta  (lame, I know)
Alpha Chi  and Alpha Kappa Mu (One of 30 people out of 9000 at my school to get into both)
Finished the University Honors requirements last year.
Should be in Phi Kappa Phi, soon.  Still waiting for the idiot president to get his sh!t in gear.
MANNRS treasurer, USNDA community service coordinator (quit that, though), and pre-med club secretary.
I'm trying to choose between a Biotechnology certification (to back up the small amount of research I've done [unpublished]) or public health (possibly with an externship) certification for good measure.  Opinions?

And, for anyone who likes to cook:
5- minute chocolate cake, microwaved in a coffee cup
http://www.instructables.com/id/5_minute_Chocolate_Cake/ (http://www.instructables.com/id/5_minute_Chocolate_Cake/)
Makes wives happy.  Check the output of your microwave, though.  I've got a 1200 watt - 2.5 minutes is perfect.

Yep, I like Glidden semi-gloss, though Baer isn't half bad either. I painted the basement with Glidden and it has held up nicely to the kids writing on the walls with crayons. The Baer worked well for the window shutters late last year and I might try it on the front door this Spring.

Sure, I've got tips on that too...you basically can't go wrong with any pictures of Jesus, Elvis, Dogs (playing poker or otherwise), bowls of fruit, or "The Duke".

A bathtub full of otters is pretty good entertainment for the price. That having been said, I'd go with the Biotechnology certification. I assume anything I don't understand must be easy and therefore you can probably knock that out in about 10 minutes...factoring in prep and clean up time of course.

Hope this helps. :D :icon_lol: :D :icon_lol:

Glad I can give tips on "something"...I really don't know d!ck about motorcycles...yet...

P.S., that instructables website is awesome. I recently built a USB powered LED light for my laptop. The ones you can buy in the store aren't long enough for my needs.

I'd like to paint more (I have a grand total of ONE unfinished picture waiting to go into the portfolio) but I'm trying to commit more time to drawing.

Man, I really miss school...:(

Also, don't worry about solvents and other toxic chemicals in your house.  Chances are you already have radon or asbestos in there so you may as well go for broke:P

Solvent in the house sets off my European wife, unless there's a way to mitigate the fumes and spills.  And, I'm too distractable for en plein.  Do you guys know of a handy bucket basket with a lid?  Kinda like "barber shop sterilization meets beer stein"?

I bet the mall and Arlington is GREAT for charcoal, Yama!  Plus, you've got those bridges.  I like small, decrepit, railway bridges.  I'm hoping to paint one soon, but abstract with vibrant colors to pull the feeling out.

Thanks for the tip on the otters.  I'm sure it will be handy during the invasion.

Any time. Otters, duct tape, and white plastic 5 gallon food grade buckets will see you through any calamity.

Find your outlaw biker name:
http://www.ratbike.org/motorcycho/outlawname.php (http://www.ratbike.org/motorcycho/outlawname.php)

Mine is Chief Will of the Donkey Punchers MC.

City biker blog:

Sort of lame, but some of you might like it.  Scooters on ice, for example.  Still lame.

Unnecessary censorship of Sesame Street, pretty funny:

Mine is "Buddha Loves You of the dirty drunkards MC". In 1% clubs women have no rights and are "property" I'd show those bastards a thing or two  :2guns:

BTW my painting usuall consit of stick figures. Art teacher told me to give up on artistic ambitions. Apparently, I have no depth perception and can't draw a straight line with a ruler! Guess, I'll stick to books and wrenching on the GS

Try painting what you feel, instead of what you see.
That's why I like O'Keefe.  He once painted what he think music feels like.  Bunch of blue curves on a white background.  Looks kinda dumb, but it's much higher art than a plate of fruit or a pair of boobs, just because he tried it.

Try it sometime.  I bet you've got a lot of images that would be very striking on canvas.  Forget accuracy or opinions.

If you paint what your heart feels like when it hurts, if it does.  I'd love to have it.  Seriously.  I'd buy it, but I wouldn't have much to give.  I'd be honored just to hang it.  Paint it out of red lithium grease using a screwdriver, I wouldn't care.  I imagine something chaotic and hurried, with a bright yellow focused center, sounded by crimson, dark, dark background, and a few high strokes on the left, looping back inward.  But, I can only imagine.
I'd love to hang something like that.  It'd be a lasting memory, should anything happen.

Xealot, your name fits you well!  Now get back in your cage!  Back, I say!

You talking physcial heart hurting or emotioinal "heart". Cause damn my physical one can drop me to my knees. I think I might give sketching a try again. But, I'm just soo dang analytical that my work of art in art class was the corner of a calculator! My teacher was like WTF is this "an upclose view of a TI-83 I said" Hmmm that's interesting think she was breaking it to me easy. 3-d is also very hard for me!

My art is usually in poetry was published in high school but don't know if there are any worthwhile contest I could enter now. Anybody got anything on that. One day I'd like to do an anthology of my work. The few that have read it say it's good but geeze don't know if they are being nice of  if it's true!

Mary,

You might enjoy Technical Illustration.  TI is where art meets engineering.  My uncle is a classically trained artist turned Technical Illustrator for going on 50 years.  His work encompassed everything from design briefs for the space program to concept sketches for circuit enclosures.

In my own sketching, I had lots of trouble interpreting the third dimension.  After reading my uncle's old books, I got it figured out.

An example of old-fashioned Technical Illustration.  It appears to be marker on paper, 1-point projection:

If you're good with a pencil, pen, and markers, you might find yourself some work in the field.  Most illustration is done on-line these days.  However, there is a market for excellent manually drawn illustration.  I conveys a feeling of quality and care not present in computer-generated artwork of any form.

No, that's not very interesting to me, GeeP.  Outside of M.C. Escher, I'm not a big fan of projection work.  The flaws are seen too easily, and it's hard to focus on anything else.  Like the frame of that portal being off-plane.  I'm just too much of a bastard to enjoy it, and I tried to give that up by leaving engineering.

The physical pain, Mary.  Or both.  Something tells me you're not gonna do it, though.   Wish you'd at least try.
