Title: GS500 front wheel problem
Post by: Simonbailes on April 18, 2009, 11:42:14 AM
I am getting to the end of a complete rebuild on my 1990 GS500. I have had the wheels shot blasted and powder coated - they look very smart! However when putting the front wheel back together I have managed to shear off one of the bolts holding the brake disc off. I have then made a mess of drilling the bolt out. I have noticed that the brake disk and bolts fit the wheel on the other side. Can you fit the brake disc on the other side without it becoming dangerous? Or am I now looking at getting the spare front wheel that I have blasted and coated?

Cheers.

Simon.

You can likely take it to a machine shop and have them helicoil the bolt.

Mdow/ivany,

thanks for your input, I guessed that I would need to replace the wheel. It's always worth checking, though!!

Cheers.

i agree with ivany. you can take it and have the hole opened up and re tapped and then a helicoil fitted and you then theoretically have what you started with. and its not that expensive compared to replacing the wheel and re blasting.

I just did the same thing on my 1992 Gs...definitely not fun. Those bolts use blue loctite that makes them tough to get out. Instead of attempting to do it myself, i have my local stealership do it for $40.00. Good as new now.

Instead of replacing the rim, you might want to have a shop look at it first and give you a quote on the repair.

Good luck!

Got a new wheel from e bay then had it powder coated by local supplier - all fitted on bike now.
