Title: friend buying R6 with some "issues"...
Post by: LOUiE on April 18, 2009, 10:30:47 PM
a friend of mine wants to buy an R6.  The one he has his eyes on is a 99 that fell over on this guy's driveway.  The issue with the bike is that it won't shift into 3rd.  I'm assuming that the bike fell on the left side thus jamming the shifter up a bit.  He really wants to buy this bike.

Any idea what the issue could be?  or how much time/cost he could expect if he were to fix it?

The bike is listed at $2500 CAN, and has 25,000 K on it.

Any help would be great.

the owner may -wish- it was only a bent shifter lever, but i'll bet there are transmission issues.

R6's aren't usually ridden lightly.

of course, a test ride will confirm if the tranny is shot or not. won't catch ME test riding anything with transmission issues though !

+1

Everyone I know with an R  before the cc size rides the crap out of their bikes.  I wouldn't be surprised if tranny is done.  ANd if he DOES test ride it, watch for choppiness when shifting into other gears.  Also, tell him not to try and "force" it into gear.  Guy I know was doin like 60 when he forced it, wheel locked up and down he went.  I personally would look for a different bike, unless your friend has no problem pullin the transmission and fixin it... :dunno_black:

All 99-02 r6 bikes have major transmission issues.  These years of R6 transmissions are either broken, will be broken soon, or have already been serviced.  It is a design problem that was addressed with the 03 model.

If it was me I would avoid this bike all together and save for an 03.
