Long story short...
- Was on Motorcycle for first ride of season, went to get gas, was tooling around town.
- Hit gas main cap that was carelessly left in road upside down (about a 6x3 cup shaped cast iron object, probably left there by a lazy union road worker)
- Bike Jumped a solid foot into the air, was not as cool as it looks when it happens in the movies
- Went flying off bike... miraculously landed back on bike without falling over.
- Got to enjoy the sensation of being off the bike and staring at road beneath me.
- Got to enjoy the sensation of not dying.
- Lost shoe somehow.
- Pulled over, intact. Hobbled back home on 2 flat tires at 5 mph (about 1.5 miles).
- Inspected damage, 2 flat tires, 2 bent rims. Front rim has 2 inch dent. Rear rim has inch dent. Possible damage to swingarm.
- Returned to accident scene, reclaimed shoe, declared victory against capricious uncaring universe.
That is all.
The most important thing is that you're safe. I was test riding a new bike today and some lady pulled out right in front of me. Luckily I could tell she might go for it and was able to slow down and move out of the way.
It's always scary, but at least you're fine. buying two new tires and rims is a lot cheaper and easier than fixing a broken neck or legs.
Glad your safe, but I would fill out an accident report and go after the city. I busted a tire, rim, tie rod end, and a sway bar from a pothole in Chicago. Immediately called the cop, called my insurance and the city of chicago paid for it all.
Glad to hear you're ok. You should complain to the city, but the chances of them doing anything are slim. The city I grew up in failed to maintain a storm drain running next to my parent's house and even after the house sunk 8 inches on one side, they wouldn't pay for it until they were sued. I guess you could try small claims court, it is cheap and neither side can bring a lawyer, so your chances aren't that bad...
On another note, you drove 1.5 miles on 2 flat tires? Whatever for? Seems like an unnecessary risk when you could just call a tow truck... Why risk a second accident in a day by riding a bike with bad handling and braking?
City / county / municipality /whatever should be insured for this kind of thing. It is possible to make a claim against them for negligence or something (I'm no lawyer -- consult one for your best options).
Or don't. Pick up cheap replacements here and enjoy the rest of your life.

yeah, go take pictures ASAP and complain. Might not even need an attorney, and since you weren't injured sounds like you aren't goin to be trying to get money out of the.
State usually has limit on liability.. usually 100k-200k.
BTW IMO you're doing everyone a favor, no worker should be "lazy" and leave shi* like that out on the road for us bikers to get f***d up.

I actually think that I didn't come back down square and my left foot hit the ground while my right one found the peg. The shoe just popped off as it was fairly loose (I normally wear boots but I was just going to get cas at the corner to get her ready for commuting). It's ironic because I think that if I was wearing my boots my foot may have dragged and took me down. I also damn near lost the sock too.
Anyhow now I'm trying to figure out whether I want to sell the bike as is for a discount or to try and find a pair of takeoff wheels and tires.
Does anyone know which years wheels will fit on a 94?
any year wheels oughta fit I think. far as I know they were unchanged other than color really.
definitely call the city and make em pay for the negligence. its lucky that thing didnt cause a worse crash, or you would have been in lots of pain, and suing them for incompetence/negligence/whateveryoucan damages.
