ok we gave up on my bike, we did everything to make it run right but its still running lean, only thing left is to get rid of that piece of s**t K&N filter and get an OEM filter for it, thats the only thing we can think about that might make the bike run good and not run rough on idle, its even turning off once u stop on a light, it even turned off on me while shifting down, it kinda sputtered and died, its kinda frustrating. Do u guys thing it might be somethin other then the air filter?
I actually just talked to my uncle about this same thing today
He used to tune bikes for a race team and really knows his stuff when it comes to bikes so i trust him( not saying you will )
He said unless you really know what your doing when tuning a bike and are able to get everything just perfect that the kn filter is going to do more harm then good. Im actually taking my bike to him this weekend and he is going to walk me through the whole thing of tuning my bike and he was adiment we put my stock air filter back on.
That being said i personaly dont know much this is just what he told me so thats what im going off of . Hope you get her running right though.
i know, my brother is a bike mechanic, he works in the biggest bike shop in the area, and my bike sat there for almost 1 week being tuned and what not and even dyno runs to see how it runs, they got it as close as possible but still runs like crap because of that filter, they told me to put the original in it also and they assured me it will work 100%, those things are hard to find im waiting for mine right now
If you kept the restrictor ring that comes with the K&N filter you can put it in and get the same flow of an OEM filter. I wish my PO kept it and gave it to me with the bike. Doesn't sound to me your problem is the filter, not that I think your uncle is wrong about a stock filter being a good starting point, it is. So is returning the carbs to the book settings.
I read all of your posts and from what you've said my bike was doing the same thing last year from time-to-time after I bought it, but not so it was much of a problem. At times after the bike was fully warm I would approach a red light and the revs would stay up, then slowly return to normal. If they stayed high I'd search high and low again for vacuum leaks or take the carbs apart but until they do I won't. As the months go by the problem is diminishing, in fact it hasn't done it yet this spring and I've ridden almost a thousand miles. As you know they're vacuum-operated so if anything is sticking in the top portions of the carbs it can cause this by holding the tapered needles up.
I put 2 ounces of Marvel Mystery Oil in each fill-up. Others use Seafoam and get good results. They lubricate your fuel system, dissolve nasty stuff and have a way of making driveability problems improve or go away. Your bike has very few miles but it's old like mine so carbs can get sticky just from sitting all those years. I'm very curious to know what the resolution to this turns out to be.

I agree 100%, but it really isn't hard to jet and tune for aftermarket air filters. Heck even a stock bike with a stock air filter could benefit from rejetting and tuning. There is so much great info on this board that getting everything just perfect is pretty easy on the first try.
My idle is rock solid with a lunchbox and slipon, and I would imagine lots of people on this board have much more than just an air filter mod done and have a good idle. I'm with Bill on there being something more than just an air filter causing these problems.
Im assuming some of those were at me sence you metioned the uncle
I actually got the bike running really good sence resent posts(thanks for the help guys), Uncle actually complimented how good i did for my first gp at the carbs. All he said is he would like to go threw it once more with me and that it still has some room for improvment from what he can tell by riding it. He actually had a gs way back in the day and isnt so much going to tune it because its running bad , just because I asked him to teach me and he said he thinks he can get it a little better then it is now.
