hello once again friends. For those who might remember, this is the guy who years ago published the '1 dollar tankbag' guide.
I've been riding on and off, still on the one and only GS500 and motorcycle I have ever had. I recall asking this so long ago, but I believe the answer was to 'put up with it'.
My bike is a 2005 and every since the 1st day I purchased it, the rear brake tends to squeal on usage. Was there ever a solution found for this issue?
I am the kind of guy who uses both the front and rear brake to stop (per MSF instructions).
I would appreciate any experiences and successful stories regarding this subject. Thanks!! :icon_mrgreen:
there have been few who said that applying anti squeak on the bottom part of the brake pad helps. Another bunch said that new brake pads (both organic and HH) eliminated the problem, and yet another group recommended to stop using the rear brake.
I went with the last ones and let me tell you that it was a good choice.
When I started riding I used to use rear brake a lot... (bad habit from bicycle riding days). It was until a day I almost high sided doing 80mph... after that I almost completely stopped using rear brake. And guess what... NO more squeaks :woohoo: :D
cheers
PS. I think I remember your $1 bag. was it a bag that used HDD magnets??
I remember ya...anyway...take the pads out and rub them over some sandpaper on a flat surface to take the glaze off, put em back in, let them bed in all over agin and then see what happens.
yep, the $1 tankbag with old hard drive magnets :technical:
Thanks for the responses. I will try to grind them with sandpaper first and if that does not work, then I guess I will work on my habit of using them.
Yea... How about that cool guy that invented the $1 tank bag.. That guy rocked!
???
"You might remember me from such self-help videos as "Smoke Yourself Thin", and "Get Confident, Stupid.""
Anti-squeal on the back of the pad can help, as can the re-bedding.
The rear brake is a useful tool; I wouldn't toss it because of some noise.
New pads will only fix the problem for a little while. I'd go for anti squeal and perhaps the re bedding if I were you. Wait, I am pretty much you, my rear brake has started to squeal pretty bad in the last few weeks and I changed the pads just a couple of thousand miles ago... I think I'll at least toss some more anti squeal on them, and if I have some sandpaper handy when I take them out, I might hit them with that too... There is plenty of thickness left in the pads, so I'm guessing the anti squeal I put in there originally is all gone now...
Personally I always use the rear brake and the front, it squeals yea, who cares. It does go away after using it awhile, and sporadically it comes back, and goes away. Rinse and repeat.
swap to the kat rear wheel and rotor best squeal be gone i put on my bike. :thumb:
Your brake pads are probably contaminated with oil/road crap. Whip 'em out and clean them like sledge suggests. When I re-oiled my forks recently the front brakes squealed a bit. When I took the pads off and inspected them a load of crud had bulit up on them (I had only replaced them 2 months before). The relative position of the brake pads to the disc changes minutely whenever you remove/replace the wheels. In my case it brought the crud into contact with the disc - hence the squeal. All I needed to do was 'tidy up' the edges of each pad with a file and problem solved.
bassman
i'm big on using my rear brakes as well. i recently changed my rear brake pads out a couple of weeks ago. no more squealing. though, i've read that the gs is notorious for squealing so we just really have to deal with it.
i haven't tried any of this anti-squeal stuff that everyone has been mentioning, though next time my brakes start squealing i'm gonna look into that option.
cheers,

After 36 years of riding (street) and 20+ bikes, Honda M-77 Assembly Paste is the only thing I have found that works for any length of time if you can't find the right pads.
