So I have swapped my E headlight for that of an F model. I have it mounted and went out and got some new turn signals today and was under the impression that it was pretty much going to be as easy as plugging in the bullet connectors. I did the left first and when I test it out they stay on and blink once every few seconds...And then I put the right one on and try it out...the turn signal is 3 times brighter than the other one and it stays on without the signal being activated. It lights up with the headlight...
I don't know much about electrical systems. Any ideas on how I can fix this?
your new lights may be LED? in which case please search the forum regarding LED setup. it requires a certain extra thing to have.
he's correct, and I think it may (ie. im not sure) also affect regular filament bulbs of a lower(higher?) wattage
they arent LED. assuming the wattage issue...what can be done?
have you tried swapping the wires and seeing what that does?
you need to find out if they require less power than the stock ones (prob do)
When there isn't enough resistance in the circuit the bulbs will stay on. You can add resistance to the line, or you can replace the relay.
Nothing to do with wattage/LEDs. The indicator and headlamp circuits are totaly independant of each other. If one is lighting up with the other, the circuits are crossed. You need to carefully check the wiring against a schematic.
Its just really confusing because I just plugged them into the free connectors that the originals came out of...I will have to fiddle more when I get a chance. As far as a "relay" what would i be looking for at the store?
when you turn the bike on, do the signals come on right away and stay lit? or only when you flick a turn?
ie: flick turn signal left the 2 left signals stay on.
Caution: I had the same problem until a nice POP noise came upon me. The turn flasher thing exploded. So get it straight or you're going to have to buy a $20 flasher!
When i turn the bike on the RIGHT front signal comes on and stays on and its super bright. The LEFT one comes on when I signal left but it comes on and pretty much stays on and only blinks once every 5 sec or so.
double check and make sure you're wires aren't crossed...
then go and buy a new relay if everything checks out. you need something with a lower or slower flash.
it's a strange circuit on these bikes.

also, just did some quick looking... looks like the stock relay is ... a 2 prong generic relay (wagner 552) you can get from basically any autoparts store.
It might be worth going into said autoparts store and asking for something that is meant for lower wattage bulbs. Unfortunately I don't know the specs.

Went out and fiddled on the bike some...
There are two sets of two connectors. two wires per signal. well i mixed and matched and played around. each set of wires has a colored wire and a black wire. I got the left mounted signal to work and blink correctly with its two wires connected to each black wire. That leaves the other signal to be plugged into each colored wire. And that damn signal just comes on when i turn the key to the ON position. it turns off when i activate the turn signals for its side. 5 min later...no matter what combo i plug that individual signal into it just lights up with key in ON position.
Talking about the wires with words is confusing as heck. Anyways..
Yea for each turn signal, there is 2 wires coming out of it, and it connects to two wires near it. One should be connected to a colored wire, and one to a black one.
I have the F model and thats how it is, for the right signal the colored wire is green i think, and the left signal i think the "colored" is black with a white stripe
Sounds to me like you have one signal connected to ground wires from the left and the right side.
