I've been dealing with this for 4 days now and can't figure out the solution...
Here's where I'm at...
- bike starts and idles fine for 2-3 mins tops. RPMs drop suddenly and bike shuts down.
- try to start again, won't start. If it does, can't get RPMs over 1.5 with full twist of throttle. If I let go, bike will die.
- petcock on ON. Put frame mounted petcock on PRI. Gas almost immediately pours from airbox drain.
- Both sparkplugs are full of shyte after only 15 mins of idling.
Here's what I've done...
- fresh gas.
- replaced sparkplugs. Old were... soiled. Tuns of crap on both.
- cleaned carbs (over 6 times now, and gone over EVERYTHING very thouroughly)
- checked floats (they float ;) ), checked for ware on any parts, everything is great.
- checked/adjusted float height.
- checked/cleaned ALL fuel/air hoses including vacuum. Also made sure all airways were clean in carbs (inlet on top of carb, etc)
- checked/cleaned frame mounted petcock.
- cleaned/oiled air filter.
- adjusted idle screw.
- oil change. Oil had gas in it. read in this post. http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=7549.0 (http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=7549.0) it could cause this problem.

if the gas immediately pours out of the airbox drain when you prime it, your float height is definitely off
you say that you adjusted the float height, but these symptoms reflect otherwise. It seems as if your motor is slowly flooding itself of gas everytime you start it up/prime it, and getting into the crankcase too apparently.
try setting the float height again. if you set the float height properly and the airbox/crankcase is still flooding, your might have a float needle that isn't sealing well, and you might need to replace it
well I've checked checked checked and re-checked my float height. My Clymer says between 13.6 & 15.6mm. Right now it's at 14.0mm.
could be the needle i suppose. :dunno_white:
If ur sure the float heights ok, I'm thinking float needles, float seat o-rings.
which is the float seat o-ring?

what exactly is 'in contact'? press the arm til the floats pop up? (just backchecking some hopefully not stupid things I've done)

Have you tried to adjust the foat height with the carbs on the bike and filled with fuel using the clear tubing method?

i've done it in the past but not this time around... perhaps i should :cheers:
checked float height.
Right side is perfect.
Left side is about 1/4" lower than the gasket.
fixed float issue.
so I reattached the carbs after adjusting the height using the on-bike method, left the airbox off, and reattached all the hoses. Put her on prime to fill up the carbs and after a 30 seconds the left carb started leaking into what would be the airbox. Bike had obviously filled up the float bowl and extra was leaking. so READJUSTED the float heights. Now they're perfect on either side but still leaking from the left. So I took the left one apart and studied the float valve and it looks a little worn. Not much, but just a little but I think I'll replace it.
do you think that will solve all my problems? or just the leaky carb?

and to boot... the left spark plug was wet when I took it out.

33 is the seat and float needle. 34 is the oring I was referring to. What is in contact is the top of the needle (not rubber end). Hope that clears it up a bit.
