I'm calling him tomorrow. I'll probably be buying the single rider system.
Seems to be decent stuff. One Kiwi rider used the first unit in the rain for over an hour without a problem, the $80 (NZ) one. That's around $46 (US). Dunno if it's a fake testimonial or not, but worth a shot for the price.
Free postage worldwide for $100 (NZ) order. Not too shabby.
So you plan on using your phone while riding your bike?
Yep.
Turn by turn GPS, a program that warns me when I'm within 5 MPH of a chosen speed limit, bluetooth intercom with other group riders, soothing music to prevent me from "squid-ing out", real-time weather and traffic updates, mileage reminder so I don't run out of gas again, travel guide to tell me about nearby interests, geocaching, and whatever else I can find.
And, yes, if I want to answer a call, I'll answer a call.
Now, if you (or anyone else) wants to complain, feel free. You can fill every server on the planet with your opinions, until the pixels are more numerous than the warts on Rosie O'Donnell's love lips. But, unless you're driving a Bradley to Food-Lion and can guarantee me that you'll never injure another living thing (purposefully or otherwise), I don't care for your ego-pumping critiques on whether I should listen to the radio when I'm riding my bike.
Now, if you don't mind, I've gotta finish my final exams, so I can one day be sued by some self-absorbed, judgmental, egotistical, money-grubbing fungus that barely count the change required to buy his daily poison, and possibly get some sleep.
I have nothing wrong with music or GPS.
But a phone call doesn't seem like the wisest thing to do.
That being said.
You've logged more hours riding than I have (My total is 0).
So I really have no place criticizing your choices.
I have a system that gives me my GPS data, warns me when I exceed speed limits and warns me about "safety" cameras and radars etc. It also allows me to take phone calls, the GPS screen tells me who it is and i can answer with a touch screen. The quality on the move is less than great, i can hear fine but my transmission picks up all sorts, probably an issue with my flip-up helmet. What i do now is see who the caller is and if i want to have a conversation I stop and call them back, i do this for two reasons, quality of call and I am not entirely happy about having conversations whilst riding but if you are then fine - but take care.

HOLY POSTAL WORKER BATMAN!
All the guy did was ask if you were going to answer phone calls. Over react much?

Pre-med + finals + anything that can be slightly construed as judgmental = kaboom!
I'll be nice, now that it's over. (At least until grades are posted.)
I saw the speed camera/radar program. If I remember correctly, the maps are only available for Europe, correct?
Had to do a hard reset on mine yesterday or the day before, from loading too many CAB files. Lost all of my contacts. Couldn't get the dial pad or the soft-keys to work on the stupid thing; some sort of conflict apparently. I won't have to worry much about distracting conversation if I can't receive calls...
What are you using, Cal?

Ooof. Pre-med. I've been seriously considering it for a while now. Any recommendations on where to go, what to focus on, or how to survive?
Err, didn't mean to jack the thread here...
I guess everything's about experience listening to music and whatnot. I mean, when I first started driving I would hate having the radio because it would be distracting, but as you get more and more accustomed to riding, I think the radio might not be too horrible. Hooking it up to a touchscreen GPS would be a big bonus for serious riding too. Like wladziu said, you can always pull over and call back.

you post to online forums too much ^ and kaboom is a definite sign of your level of maturity. ;) if you're doing -anything- with cab files or re-installing -anything- on wincrap while you're taking finals, your focus is way off. you should know better. that being said....
when folks give you advice to not use a phone while driving/sexing/jumping-off-of-cliffs there are reasons for it. one very good reason is you will LIKELY NOT ENDANGER THE REST OF US on the road if you abstain from sexting while riding/driving/cliff diving. i could care less if 100,000 lemmings hopped off a cliff every day. it would free more resources for my kids (and myself). not to mention free up some pretty sweet roads.
gps is a great thing. an amazing invention. an excellent tool. then
tools get distracted while driving down the road to adjust the gps, and BOOM. take the advice of others.
they may not be smarter than you, a quicker wit, or millionaires, but through hundreds if not thousands of mistakes and observing the RESULTS of OTHERS mistakes have managed to get wiser. <--- that's the part you want to remember right there.i like reading your rants. if they had a little buddha mixed in with a hint of the quality of rich (rip) they'd be really neat. Anything else, babyboomer? Any other "life lessons" you can give me to help you feel like a father figure?
I can rant here, all day long, and the only thing that would really stop me would be for someone I respect to acknowledge me as valuable. It used to be you I respected, until this recent show of your "moral superiority". You're smarter than 99.9% of people here - we could have had interesting conversations. But, you're never anywhere to be found, except when you're pointing and laughing at me having a bad day.
Yes, I post on here too often. Probably because this forum is the sum total of my social life. Maybe because everywhere I go, some jackass is trying to run me out for not having his exact same personality. I weigh 135 lbs... you think this is the first time someone has told me one of my faults? But, not this time, AARP-member.
Screw you, OhGood.
I went off on the guy because I quit smoking last week, after 10 years, and didn't want to admit it because I'm trying to be a doctor.
But, take your motorcycle knowledge and your self-importance, and shove it. I'll sell the bike before I respect your opinion, again.
And, seriously, "millionaires"???
You think I seriously haven't heard that before? Cause, yeah.... the only folks I respect are rich, because I'm pre-med.... No, that's not insulting in the slightest. I thought you'd know better, I really did.
The ONE thing I'm ashamed of here is having argued with RoadsterGal. But, you can suck it, OhGood.

Maybe you, him, and the 80 dozen other old folks on this forum can sit around and think up new and interesting ways to embarrass and insult people that dare to consider safer ways of using their cell phone while driving. How many other ways can you twist the argument of: "my family is more important than you, and I'm not at all immoral for saying so..."
The local paramedic unit has told me that I'd be more than welcome to use my phone GPS on the ambulance to help me find you and your all-important family when you run your Oldsmobile into a tree while arguing about politics with the talk-radio host.
So, no, there's not gonna be a lot of "fixing" from me in this thread.

man that stuff was funny ! as far as personal offense and stuff, i guess i'm getting thicker skinned. so long as you can find humorous vids and pictures, i'm cool with it - thanks !
:)
Whatever your opinion is - keep it to yourself.
I looked up to you when I first joined this place: you seemed intelligent, amiable, had influence on others without forcing it. I was hoping you'd teach me stuff. You could have been a positive influence on me, and maybe I wouldn't rant as much as I do. Same as RoadsterGal.
But, you're not here for that... Just like her, and just like me, you're here to correct people and look cool, to find entertainment, maybe find somebody you deem worthy to talk to.
We're no different.
'Cause I've figured out the key you guys have been using. Praise someone, but never when it really matters. Throw your opinions around left and right, but never come out and show someone that you really respect them. And, if you keep it up long enough, people start to believe it.
For example, if my education was so important to you, where were you when I helped the guy on the physics problem that no one else could solve?
Cause, when you show respect, you lose it. Right? Cause that's sure what you guys have been teaching me.
If you want a worthy opponent, why don't you try to correct the Indian guy that talks about himself in 3rd person? Too scary? Figure you'd tell someone half your age that he's immature, instead?
I've got no beef with you, Xealot. You're the coolest old guy on here, in my opinion. You're quirky and interesting, without trying to force your taste in Aerostitch clothing down everyone's throat.
Unlike your conceited compadre (note the alliteration :D), I hope you don't expect me to perform fellatio on the guy, after I've already admitted I was wrong to fuss at him.
Pavi:
1. Don't expect a soul to give a d@mn, including EVERY member of your family and closest friends - past, present, and future. The ones that matter won't care if you're a janitor, so they're not gonna congratulate you as much as you'd like. The ones that don't like you will only use it to embarrass you (notice, the "millionaire" comment?). Only do it for yourself.
2. You don't need to like people. You just need to like flesh and bone, blood and guts. Bedside manner is for prom queens and hookers. Find a surgeon that isn't an incredible @sshole, and you'll have found the exception.
3. Stay away from studentdoctor!
4. You know you'll have to compete with the highest percentile to get into school, but have you considered that you'll also have to compete with them daily as a physician? Raises, job politics, proper procedure... do you really want to deal with the smartest @ssholes you've ever met on a daily basis? Can you hack it?
5. Stay away from studentdoctor!
6. Approach every class as if you're the dumbest person in the room, and not the smartest (like you're probably used to). The day you forget or get cocky is the day you lose your 4.0. Once you lose it, you'll spend the following years in agony.
7. Take your med school pre-reqs in the first 2 years, not what the university schedule tells you. It'll let you apply two years earlier, then finish the BS stuff without rushing to study for the MCAT.
8. If you wanna do it, then go for it. MD's not the only game in town, if you don't get in. DO is just as respectable, you're still a doctor, except the acceptance GPA cut-offs are around 3.2 and up, instead of 3.7 and up. Then, there's PA school, optometry (bleh!), CSI, bioengineering, biostatistics, lab work, chiropractic ( :icon_rolleyes:), and on and on and on. But, follow #6, and see where it leads you.
9. School costs, interest rates, malpractice, housing, staffing wages - all the costs are rising, but physician pay is decreasing. A surgeon I know has to pull about $10K a month, now, just to keep his practice OPEN. Yet, he has to constantly lower his fees in order to keep patients. More and more hours, less and less time to enjoy the fruit. Making less per hour than most automobile factory workers, yet everyone thinks you're gonna be a rich @sshole.
If you were a factory worker that performed the same tasks as physicians, would you want to do it every day? $8 an hour, 80+ hours a week, in the epicenter of urban disease and suffering? (Tuberculosis is on the rise, by the way.)
10. Be the change you want to see in the world... or some crap. I dunno. Ask me more direct questions, and I'll tell you what I know.
let us know how it works out but i would listen to those who gave advise on the distraction factor. Its easier than you might think to get into a rhythm and just plain miss things that may end your existence.

My money's on d@mn-near full time vasopulmonary sympathetic stimulation.
wait a doggone minute, my mind's playing tricks on me today: beta-blockers. That's what I was talking about.
Suppose it's already been tried, though.
Don't know anything about microvascular disease. Interesting, though. Is the problem in your coronal arteries, or more widespread?
'Cause if vasodilation is your problem, I bet it sucks at your house during breakfast-time. No bacon for you, Patches.
Just finished my clinicals, today. With flying colors might I add! Only forgot to auscultate bilaterally on a severe-fall trauma. Not too bad for a newbie, would you say, Mary?
My intubations have gotten a lot quicker. I'm loving the Macintosh blade.
Not sure what the MOI was on your trauma but no listening to the lungs might be bad MMMMKAY! I remember one of my pracicles yelling at my preceptor "you go call 911 and report back to me" "uhm, Mary you are 911" yeah that sucked
Yeah, the biggest problem with the beta blockers is the whole blood pressure bit. I can barely get the bp above 100 on a good day. I'm not even tolerating 12.5 mg of toporol a day. For the microvascular disease it is widespread even down to my veins. So, in essence big heart small veins = constant chest pain on minimal exertion. My EF when diagnosed was 85% within 2 years it was down to 45%. Docs are still trying to make heads or tails on how good or bad that is. Good that it's down to a little below a normal person. Bad that it did it in 2 years and will it keep doing so. I.E burnt out stage, dilated, all the other names they can come up with. I've seen the best in the world and they too are stumped.
I may try the L-arginine again it seemed to help in the past. Maybe it will open things up just enough to get relief without sending me down the toilet bp wise.
Keep going student. And no way in hell are you toucing me at least 'till you are Resident A$$hole! Good luck
Mary
i think having intercom capabilities between rider and passenger would be good. and using your phone with hands free i don't think is much more of a distraction than your radio or gps or hands free cell in your car. (and i know that everyone one of you uses at least one of those items in your car). better than i've seen some people do, there are people who actually USE their cell(not hands free) whilst riding and even send text messages. :cookoo:

I've actually got the ScalaRider unit... I've had to call 911 on a couple occasions where there was a drunk driver on the road. I stayed on the line with them telling them exactly where they were going. As soon as an LEO caught up, I was free to continue on my merry way.
But they sure suck at highway speeds. I once tried to make a call on the highway when some idiot side-swiped an 18-wheeler and just kept going. I was scared shitless 'cause I was right behind them. When I calmed down, I sped up and got the plates. I tried to tell the 911 operator the situation, but they couldn't hear me and I couldn't hear them. I had to stop on the side of the road and talk. By the time I was done with the call, both vehicles were long gone. I didn't feel like going 100+ to catch up.

I'll stop holding my education over you when folks stop reverting to expletives. I'll send you a thesaurus if you want!

And so what if I am being a b!tch? I've made it perfectly clear that I don't like you, a few months ago. Every time you show up, I feel like washing my computer monitor. Somehow, you make the internet seem germy, like Lionel from Charlie Brown.
Maybe you're a glutton for punishment?
I didn't know Trendelenberg actually worked! Thought it was a myth; just something to do when there's nothing else TO do.
Your BP crashes when you stress, because your cardiac tidal volume increases, clogging your thin vascular system like people rushing to leave a building. High aortic pressure (large hallway) but small arterioles (tiny doorways). Throw a little adrenalin into the mix (widespread zombie panic)... You probably get an initial surge, then vascular collapse.
I'd have you dye-tested for balloon aneurysms, instead of stressing you about thyroid growths. My sincerest apologies for my comment on that, by the way. It wasn't meant to insult you. Just trying to help, in my way.
I hear you about being a "display piece". Must have been really insulting/embarrassing/scary. I'll keep it in mind, so I don't treat someone the same way.
honesty is the best policy. :thumb:
Wow, is this still going on? Maybe the board should engage the services of a fight-promotor, sell tickets and make some money - - - it just so happens that I have a promotions business.........
And to get back to the origional subject, I use one of those Scala-Rider things, i find it OK but less than brilliant although a freind of mine thinks it's the greatest thing since sliced bread.

How did you know my address, are you stalking me? Maybe you should wash your monitor again, it seems the internet is foggy with the sleaze streaming out of my NIC. Yeah thats a gigabit connection of sleaze to baby so i hope you have a big towel cause its going to get sticky :icon_lol: :icon_lol:
So bluetooth helmets eh....
Yeah, Bluetooth helmets,
My helmet was getting a bit crabby so i was looking around for a replacement and discovered "built-in" bluetooth. I have just ordered a Viper RS-V121 flip top with built-in mic and twin speakers, comes out much less than buying seperatley, should have it in four or five days so I'll test it well with sat-nav, phone and music and post the result.
That'd be helpful, Cal.
Glad you could turn this thread back in the right direction. Hopefully your review thread won't get bashed, as well.
Haven't bought the Kiwi unit, yet. Mother's Day, and all. I'll post a review thread also, if yours is well received.
Yes, I am interested in the integral idea because as you probably gathered I am less than 100% delighted with the Scala-rider that was supplied with my Tom-Tom, I found a larger range than I expected given that not that many manufacturers make a flip-front helmet anyway. There were several and prices started in the 90's (GBP) up to around 200. The one Iwent for was 125 which for a flip-front with inner sun visor and integrated blue-tooth and latest safety standard seemed pretty good. my only complaint is none of them did one in Blue so i have settled for "silver" - we shall see.
OOH, you're getting THAT helmet.
That's a nice helmet.
The Nolan, right? I almost got that one.
It's gonna be interesting to see your opinions on the flip-front mechanism. Supposedly, they improved the design to be safer upon impact. If so, that's gonna be pretty useful to you. Can actually drink from a soda or talk to somebody or vacate an invading hornet.
And, that internal sun visor gadget is t!ts! Wish I had one in my Sparx. Once you've worn it for a while, come back and let us know how often you use it. I'm wondering if I like it because I like gadgets, or if it's actually worth the cost. The weight surely isn't an issue, since it's only a few grams.
What was wrong with the Scala-Rider, besides being so expensive?
I've been a convert to flip-fronts for quite a while, this new one will be my third. :thumb:
The Scala-rider is pretty good for listening but I have had a lot of problems with my end of the conversation not being clear, :dunno_black: like I said earlier I would normally stop rather than get into conversation on the move. A mate who is an official of the Suzuki Owner Club (1250 Bandtit G.T.) has the same tom-Tom Rider 2 as me and a Scala-Rider and is very happy with his, I think my problems may be somethingmore related to the helmet but hopefully I will know for sure in a day or two.
This is the kiddie.....but not the dealer I have used (mine was less cash) I have put this one in because it prices in several currencies.

Maybe it's that "motorcycle radiation" causing interference...

Whoooops, - - - is that something else I should be worrying about? I'm old enough to remember a time when cigarettes were good for you (calmed the nerves!) so i won't be getting frantic just yet. :dunno_black:
Are there any similar bluetooth setups that are DOT/SNELL approved for the US?
Well the Viper helmet arrived, it works very well with my basic nokia phone and also the TomTom SatNav. The helmet is a good quality and excellent fit. I had some problems setting it up with the SatNav but a quick phone call to the helpline and they e-mailed me two pages of instructions that were missing from the package and an e-mail from the managing director of the importer with advice and giving me a toll-free phone number for further advice.
It seems that compatibility is much better with Garmin, so if you bought the Helmet first, go Garmin but i already have TomTom. I can't (yet) set it up to use sat and phone together which I can do with Scala-Rider and I have had some advice which I have yet to try. In reality I'm not too bothered as I normally used the Scala for one or the other so I'll probably do likewise with this but my all-round impression is good piece of kit and good back-up service.
All in all I recon the helmet is worth the dosh even without the electronic gismo and the Oxford helmet bag and three Oxford comfeys (neck tubes) that were thrown in. :thumb:
So, when I had my unintended conversation with :police: yesterday. He told me that it was indeed illegal here in Osceola county Florida. I was like why are they selling them at all of our motorcycle dealerships and they are Dot/ Snell? His reply they sell the tiny crotch rockets too but can't ride those on the road. So, I'm debating if I want to get this one when I get the extra dough! http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/1/1/38/17571/ITEM/Element-Fastrack-Bluetooth-Solid-Helmet.aspx?SiteID=CSE_Nextag_038&WT.mc_ID=80005&zmam=88421133&zmas=1&zmac=4&zmap=17571
BTW the officer said he'd never ticket anyone for it because he does the same thing himself!
Mary
Still haven't bought the equipment, after all of that hooplah. Waiting to count it as a birthday present.
But, I DO have Katana forks! I can ride again! All sign-posts beware!

Mary... if you are referring to the helmets that have built-in bluetooth equipment, I'm pretty sure it's legal as long as it's DOT approved.
Nope I specifically asked him that! Because, I was seriously looking at the helmet I linked to earlier. That helmet looks great style wise etc. Would like to try one on to make sure it fits my bean head right.
The conversation came up because he just happened to see the chord coming out to my shuffle. One time I don't wear my jacket I get nailed! Buuut, he wouldn't have seen the T-shirt ;) When I have my jacket there is only about an inch or so of wire visible.
It is odd however that it says on a website that speakers built into a helmet are legal! And the way my helmet it set up is just as if it were "built" in being they are permanently affixed. :dunno_white:
I just don't understand why in a car people can: talk on the cell, drink, smoke, eat, read, check e-mail,text and the 5,000 other things people try to do in the car but it seems to be okay. But, on a bike ear plugs which are for safetly : i.e preventing hearing loss and fatigue are even illegal according to the LEO!
Mary
Seems to me like this should be standard equipment:

Just goes to show you that the modern-day traffic law is a cunningly designed as a source of revenue.
Oh, how I miss Europe with that "no speed limit" sign.
If I can ever afford a GPS that will def be an app I'd get! But, alas I'm a poor girl! Actually, I think a Gps is the only gadget I don't have LOL! My b-day is coming up on the 12th maybe I'll get lucky!
Mary
He told you wrong, Mary. 13 years on the road speaking, and I write policy for a living now, so I'm passingly familiar with this one :) The IPod == illegal, the helmet installed one == legal.
Florida State Statute 316.304 Wearing of headsets.--
(1) No person shall operate a vehicle while wearing a headset, headphone, or other listening device, other than a hearing aid or instrument for the improvement of defective human hearing.
(2) This section does not apply to:
...
(c) Any person operating a motorcycle who is using a headset that is installed in a helmet and worn so as to prevent the speakers from making direct contact with the user's ears so that the user can hear surrounding sounds.
Good to know. That's what I thought. It will still be awhile on that helmet but in time. If it fits right it will be the next helmet!

I was looking at those at the dealer the other day. They fit nice, but there's only one speaker (left ear) inside it.
Is that the same helmet they call the NOLAN 103 here in the states? I can't find Viper anywhere other than the UK...
Not 100% sure but I don't think so but it is rather similar.
