picture at bottom, reply-number 8 i think
self explantary really i want to do the above on all connectors, cant seem to get hold of those posi connectors this side of pond, will use something simular.
all due to a ticking comming from right spark plug after rebuild, tried the cut the lead back a little bit trick, bought new/re-conditioned coils still cant cure it.
it is not valve clearences and is intimittant, remove cap, ticking goes away straight away and obviuiosly engine labours.(runs onto the 1 cylinder)
no fat blue spark on test, cant seem to find if there is a service limit measurement clearence between pick-ups and the rotor arm
will most likely even do alll in headlight too,
is it advisable to change any/all the connections guys?
thanks,
Ant
Seems like a lot of bother that has nothing to do with your actual problem, but knock yourself out if you like. Either you still have a bad coil (try swapping left and right) or you have a bad CDI or pickup - going over all the connections, most of which are unrelated, will do nothing for it.

well after trying 4 coils, safe to say it isnt that mate, and as to the cdi,i was under the impression that if it is sending out the spark to both plugs theirs is no fault with that and the chances of just 1 pick-up failing seems a little strange to me,
but i thankyou for the advise mate
The "ticking" sound you describe could be something tracking to ground. Are the plug caps all clean and crack free?
...and for that matter, have you tried either swapping the spark plugs, or just replacing them? Cracked plug insulator might do this, even if you could not see the crack. I'd normally assume you tried that long before the coils, but since you don't say...
yeh sorry didnt mention i have tried swapping 4 spark plugs around (2 are new) - still ticking
and yes sledge, all 4 caps seem clean and crack free (i now have 4 coils!)
if this bloody rain stops today will get out their and have a complete look, clean up of the loom and pick-ups
p.s is it ok to put dielectric paste on the pick-ups,only ask as their magnectic of course??
thanks for the advise so far guys, it really is appriciated :thumb:
i think i may of found the problem-trying to upload the picture-do you agree this could course the problem-
plastic on pick-up body worn down to metal!,looks like a previous owner or mechanic managed to put some kind of plastic weld/blob over it that just fell off whilst i was cleaning them!

grrr dont know how to upload picture, will come bact to this
Go to gstwin.com (no "s"). Go to "wall of fame". Follow directions to upload picture there. Then copy the address of the picture and paste inbetween the {img} and {/img} tags you get from clicking on the image button - they have the other kind of bracket, but getting them to show up so you can see them is easier using this kind of bracket. Use the preview function to see if it works.
You can also upload them elsewhere on the web, but it's there, it's easy, and it seems to be less likely to have the images go away than some of the other image sites on the web.

thankyou DoD#i for the advise on uploading picture :thumb:
change of pick-ups didnt solve the ticking >:( but it starts a hell of a lot better!!!
going to try my 1 left certainly good coil and cap tomorrow-if it starts to tick tick on that one too, would i be safe in assuming there is an earth issue somewhere (dont understand why just that side though? the right cylinder) i have undone all the loom going from the plugs too the i.c.u hoping to find a short in the right hand side negetive black/yellow-no such luck
or is it at all possible that the i.c.u or regulator can send a current/voltage that is too high if either parts are faulty??
i say this as befiore i rebuilt the top end due to exhaust valve stuck open, hence no compression on the left side,i did swap over the coil wires white on right negative coil and black/yellow on left- oops bang bang! i made the mistake of thinking they were just earths-obviosly not, have something to do with timming too :nono:
will check out the side stand swith/relay as this does not work, also the clutch switch doesnt work? :dunno_black: :dunno_black: :dunno_black:
If it is something arcing (and not a mechanical noise) you could pull out every lightbulb on the bike, sit in the dark for 20 minutes to adapt your eyes, and run it in the dark looking for sparks.

thanks for reply DoD#i
will do tomorrow eve, have a garage but my landlords car is in there so have enough room to swing a newt! life in a block of flats with old people, gets dark around 9 ish now but sod em,they have no doubt had enough of stairing at my builders crack all this time anyway!!
bloody strange and doing my head in- changed coil and plug again over from good side--- low and behold -tick tick tick tick tick (no tick tick on left side) put back on left side no tick tick that side just still tick tick on the right side still
did manage to find a switch i missed before-cleaned it up (was behind the rear foot brake) without tank on,only gas in floats-no tick tick tick-didnt get my hopes up.put tank back on,not touching any wires or pinching anything, after 30 seconds- you guessed it-tick tick-but not as loud  im sure i have checked all earths now with the multimeter, all check out.
i beleive the diode to be faulty though(even put in wrong way round-didnt make any difference to starting/running) and think this is the course of the sidestand and clutch switch not working-should replace.checked actuall clutch switch at handle bar, checks out ok with the multimeter (different readings once ingaged to released)
did notice today that there is also 2 black/yellow wire inside the headlight cluster-these dont seem to be apparent on the haynes manual??? all i can see is black/yellow running straight from negative right coil into i.c.u? also the same for the opposite coil negative (white) im not an electric man-as you can all see :cookoo:
anyone ever heard of a faulty ignition control unit sending too much voltage to one plug or both please??????????????
