Title: 530 chain on a gs?
Post by: shiznizbiz on May 08, 2009, 03:47:47 PM
im guess this would be a bad idea, but i would like to know why.  Im thinking accelerated sprocket/chain wear/failure?

anyways, for anyone who runs a 530 on anything, cycle gear is having a sale. Im not a chain guru but that cut in the price says deal.

the pitch and width is right, but the roller is wrong:

Chain No.   Pitch   Roller Diameter   Roller Width   Sprocket thickness
Bicycle, with Derailleur   1/2"   5/16"   1/8"   0.110"
Bicycle, without Derailleur   1/2"   5/16"   3/32"   0.084"
420   1/2"   5/16"   1/4"   0.227"
425   1/2"   5/16"   5/16"   0.284"
428   1/2"   0.335"   5/16"   0.284"
520   5/8"   0.400"   1/4"   0.227"
525   5/8"   0.400"   5/16"   0.284"
530   5/8"   0.400"   3/8"   0.343"
630   3/4"   15/32"   3/8"   0.343"

(shrug) i'm guessing anything hammered against a non-fitting part 3-400 times a minute might wear out faster than a proper fitting piece. <no idea>

there, you have the info anyway :)

ROFL!!! see i knew it.  lol.  but hey atleast anyone running that size might get a good deal.....lmao.
hey ummmm, question, would it make sense to run a 530 front and rear sprocket then with that chain if its cheaper.   Im wanting to change those too.  might as well while the getting is good if it is at all possible? I could save potentially a hundred dollars or so if there were no major headaches invovled.......hmmmm....i may look like an idiot more now than ever.

If you're pinching pennies, just get a non-o-ring chain. 'course it will wear out faster so you end up replacing it sooner, but it's less cash from your wallet each time.

Whatever floats your boat.

iirc chapparell has a o-ring chain for $69. i got 20k+ out of the stock chain. then i made the mistake of using a non o-ring chain. it lasted barely 3500 before it was toast. won't do that again. ;)

clean (easy on the cleaning!) and lube (easy on the lube) every week or 300 miles and you'll have a nice long lasting chain/cogs.

really?  i might look into that and just keep my sprockets at 520....woot! now if only i had a 7th gear with the 14/45 conversion.
