Title: Another Bike Trip
Post by: trumpetguy on May 14, 2009, 10:02:53 PM
I'm leaving Saturday on another bike trip with my brother and my dad.  We have taken a road trip each of the last two years.  We will leave my place in Western Oklahoma and tour through New Mexico and Colorado, mostly sticking to excellent mountain roads.

Our trip will take eight days, and we'll be camping most of the time.  If it looks like rain or freezing temps overnight, we'll stay in a motel.  Yeah, we're getting soft, but we're all over 50!

I'll be riding my 1982 GS1100E with a newly installed Windjammer SS fairing (70s flashback).  My brother will ride his 2001 Triumph Trophy 1200 and my dad his 1994 BMW R1100RS.  I'll be a little sad not to ride my GS500E this time, but extra horsepower wins on long highway trips!

I'll have a webpage up soon after the trip with photos and full story.

I just love big trips, I usually do them alone but have done a few with small groups recently, it must be great with family, all the best to you.

We got back last night. It was an awesome trip, even though we rode in rain almost every day.  We rode through incredible scenery and even rode through snow on the top of Slumgullion Pass in Colorado (11,530 feet).

We had a few equipment emergencies between the three of us and a couple of close calls but no giant problems.  We didn't get to camp much because of the rain, so we carried a lot of extra stuff for no reason!

I'll make a webpage about the trip this week.

Thanks.  I used my aging Kodak Z7590 5MP Point and Shoot which came with a Schneider-Kreuznach 10X zoom lens.  It takes amazingly good pictures for a point and shoot.  I was really pleased with some of the mountain pics (but with scenery like that it would be hard to screw up!).

I just bought a Pentax DSLR in December, but didn't have room (or the desire to subject the DSLR to over 2000 miles of vibration) for it.  With the Kodak, I made a few exposure adjustments with Photoshop Elements before converting them to web-sized pics, but that's it.

Looks like a lot of fun. Great pics, I've only been to Crested Butte in the winter, it was cool to see those summer pics.

And I've only been in the summer!  Got any winter pics?  I'd love to see them if so.  PM or put them on Photobucket or Flickr or something.

I'll have to see if my sister took any while we were in town. I know she took some at the ski resort. If there are any good ones I'll post 'em up.

That was a great write up! I hope one day I will be able to do that if health permits!
