Title: bought a laptop tonight
Post by: jserio on May 15, 2009, 11:18:55 PM
well, 2 actually. the wife wanted one for herself as well. i bought 2 acer one laptops from walmart. they didn't have the one instock or online that i wanted anymore so we settled for the acer one's. only 400 bucks apiece. (versus 600 a piece or more. ) they only have 2gb ram and 250gb hard drives. but that doesn't matter really. here on the desktop we've only got 1gb ram and 200gb hard drive and aren't even using a quarter of the space avail. my only real complaint so far is that they don't have built in cd/dvd drives. but we plan on keeping the desktop. besides, i'm sure they make external ones with usb adaptors that we can use if we need to.   :dunno_white: anyways. don't have a wireless router yet though so i don't have a really good opinion on the lil laptop yet. i'm sure it will suit my needs fine. after all, i bought 2 of them for about the price i paid for my desktop almost 3 years ago. and just in the memory department they each have more than the desktop. so i think right now, i got a good deal. only time will tell.

About  2 months ago I bought an ASUS netbook with a 10 inch screen because I spend long days away from home I need to check email and do light web surfing, and I wanted something tiny that is easy to carry around.  I'm now using it nearly 100% of the time, and my desktop is just collecting dust!

I had to get used to its quirks, like smaller keyboard with no number pad, but I just love this little thing!  And it's got over 5 hours battery life, so I don't even carry the cord around.   :thumb:

It also came with Windows XP and Microsoft Works.  $299, no tax, free shipping.  I doubled the RAM to 2 gig for $25.

I like mine.  I use it for surfing the net, when I should be working.  It's an amazing computer for the size and price.  So much so, that it's my only computer now, as it does everything I need and I can take it anywhere.  All my machine manuals, reference tools, notes, etc are on here.  Including enough reading material for a few thousand airline flights.  :)

Just watch out for the little low-voltage power cord from the power supply.  Mine broke, right where it exits the power supply.  To be fair, I had it hanging off the table for weeks on end and twisted it a few times.  Warranty support did provide a new one though.

It will take you a few weeks to learn to type again.  But once you figure out the tiny keyboard, you can really fly!  I probably gained about 30WPM because the key reach is shorter.   :tongue2:

Oh yeah...  Showing up on a motorcycle at the local drive-in and pulling out a little black case with a "mini computer" in it gets all kinds of looks and questions.

congrats.

I love my MSI Wind Netbook.. Heck I havent used a desktop at home in ages.. I only use on at work. Though I will need a new desktop at home due to the fact that photo processing goes a lot better with a desktop. I can get more power.

I'm on the first night of a long trip.  I brought along my Asus Eee PC (very much like GeeP's).  Awesome, especially for the price.  And no hard drive (20GB of flash memory on mine for storage) so vibration is not an issue!

nice man, i didnt feel right about asking this out loud.but i was wondering this granting you circumstances and such, i apologise for nbeign nosy. btw best program i ever wrote was a variation on teh "pong" virus. completely harmless to hte pc, and removed once power is turned off. , but id take the floppy and go into walmart, and install it on all the pc's in teh area there. and walk off. and watch, the computers play pong, was funny the first few times
