Title: LF: Gas Tank to fit an '89
Post by: Streebek on May 18, 2009, 01:17:53 PM
Hey guys,

I'm looking for a mostly rust-free and dent-free gas tank to fit an '89.  Color is not an issue.  Pics would be appreciated.

Thanks!

I cant see much inside but i suspect a rust problem.  The gas is discolored and I think its causing a carb issue...

Start simple. Tank isn't actually rusted though and leaking, so - drain crappy gas.

Pull the petcock so you don't damage it.

Drop some chain in there, rattle it around. Rinse, repeat. Remove chain.

Use chain rather than nuts, etc so you can get it all back out again.
Regular chain, not motorcycle or other roller chain.

At this point either apply Kreem or the POR gastank product, or put in your petcock and refill with clean gas. You don't really need the sealers if you are not leaking, but they might help seal up the rust.

Perhaps add an inline fuel filter, since you never can get all the rust out.

Drain the carb bowls regularly - say at your 600 mile chain checks, or monthly. Helps keep the whatever from accumulating far enough to cause problems.

Keep the tank full as much as possible to reduce condensation (water) in the tank. Might toss a bit of drygas in there occasionally to help clear it out, too.
