Title: oil leak from cam chain tensioner...
Post by: KIMI on May 20, 2009, 04:31:59 AM
Hi guys...

I am from Brunei..with gs500e 1991. I found oil leaks from the cam chain tensioner. Is this a sign for replacement? or should i just apply silicon in between. (leaks from the cover with 2 small philips bolts).

Sounds like the gasket has gone bad.  I would take it apart and get the appropriate gasket material and the make a new one and reinstall the tensioner.  While you have it apart you can make sure your tensioner is good, if not the replacement should come with a gasket.  Its kind of a pain but you really want to keep your oil in the engine.

It's relatively simple to remove it and replace the gasket.  Just be sure to scrape all the old gasket material off the engine and tensioner before putting on a new one.  Or you could probably just use some RTV sealant.

I love rolls of gasket material. Cost so very little, and you can make all the little gaskets you want. A single hole paper punch is nearly the perfect size for a m5 bolt hole.

I go to a school located on an airport that does alot of work on his fleet of aircraft.

I also used to pump fuel there and some of the maintenance guys let me sneak on it one night to look around.

They were also working on his 747 at the time but they just laughed when I asked if i could get on that one.
