Title: My test of protective gear
Post by: Porkchop on May 26, 2009, 08:04:31 AM
Well, it finally happenned.  Yesterday I was caught in a rain storm while riding my motorcycle.  Due to the slick conditions I lost traction and took a closer look at the pavement.  The brunt of the fall was absorbed by the armor in the elbow.  because of the protective gear I walked away with only minor bumps and bruises.  When I went to bed last night I was feeling fine other then a few bruises and a swollen elbow.  This morning though, it feels like my whole left side tightened up while I slept.

The bike didn't fare as well.  I was able to pick up the bike and move it on to the sidewalk where it started to leak oil like a sieve.  I was able to minimize environmental impact by using an old bottle and a plastic baggy I found to catch the leaking oil.  I had to call my brother-in-law to come get me.

I'm working from home today and have found a new friend - ibuprofen.

Glad you are mostly ok. I find that some tylenol with some advil/ aleve is good. And as they are different, you should be able to mix them. Just don't drink.

Hope the bike isn't too bad off!

If you really wanted to test your gear, you could have just jumped off your roof.  At least you would still have a running bike.

Glad you are ok.  getting rag dolled sux and I hope your elbow will be ok with no ongoing issues.  My shoulder 1 year on is still giving me troubles.

Leaking oil after a crash would have been the last thing on my mind but some how you managed to pick yourself up after the crash and still think of the environment.  :thumb:

Here are the pics I promised.  If you can't see them, I've included the hyperlink at the end of the post.

This first pic is my elbow.  The swelling went down quite a bit.  There are also bruises on my knee and hip.  Taking pics of those would have required dropping trow so I did not include those pics.  The world is not ready for them yet.

Pic 2 is of the case.  The Suzuki emblem was torn off.

Pic3 is of the crack in the case.

Pic4/5/6 are of my helmet.  There were scuffs on upper left side and the vent piece on the left chin came off.

Pic7 is of my jacket.  I'm not sure about the distances of the slide but the bike and I went down before the crosswalk of the intersection.  The bike ended up just over the crosswalk and I ended up in the middle of the intersection.  So my total slide would be about 15 feet.  To my surprise, the pavement was so smooth and slick that there was no visible abrasions on the jacket.  No matter how smooth and slick the pavement was, it was still hard.

The pic I forgot to take was of my boots.  Thank god for steel toes.  I'll try to post the boots tomorrow.

That elbow looks swollen did you get it x-rayed yet?  You also got a knot on your forearm OUCH! I empathize when that danged horse kicked me I put up my arm to block my head so it took the brunt. It was black and blue from the bend of the elbow down to my wrist for weeks! I ended up with a bone contusion and now when I run my finger over the back of it I have a knot there. Took a very long time to get it back to almost normal. I still can't bowl well with it well I sucked to begin with but after a couple of frames it hurts like Hell!

No.  I've not gotten it x-rayed.  The wife kept bugging me to so I said I would go today, but earlier this morning our daughter went into labor with her third child.  So everyone went to the hospital and I'm watching the grand-kids.  I'll get to a doctor eventually.
