Title: New helmet smell
Post by: PaviSays on May 28, 2009, 03:33:26 PM
Hey guys, I finally got my new KBC Tarmac helmet in the mail yesterday!  $50, Woo!  But it seems to have a weird plasticy smell to it.  Is this smell dangerous?  I've worn it around a couple times today, and I do feel kinda sick.  After I got home from my ride, I slept away most of the day.  Does anyone have any idea how to get this smell to go away?

Try using Febreeze that is what I do to my Shoei. It is almost two years old now but it smells good. Not quite as good as the commercial cause I'd probably get ran over from huffing my helmet! I'd much rather do that when the orange blossoms are in bloom now if they could bottle that smell right. I might sleep in my helmet LOL!

Ohhh.  Maybe leave your helmet in a pile of those flowers?  That really doesn't sound like a bad idea, haha.

For the Orange Blossom I'd have to stick it in a tree LOL! Then with my luck it would have a bird's nest in it!

I think its funny that the fabreeze people say it has no smell... I think fabreeze stinks!  :) I hate when you go in someones house and it smells like fabreeze... It just lets you know it really smells like ass

I would keep it outside to air out a bit. Nothing will "get rid of it" it will just cover it up with some other funky smell...... Clean air is  the only way   maybee shove a dryer sheet or two in there as well  :icon_mrgreen:

Dryer sheets stink, too, Scott.

Just leave it out in the air.

New plastic shedding VOCs (Volitile Organic Carbon - aka stinky plastic smelling molecules that depart from the plastic rather than staying in it).

Point a fan at it if you like.

If it has a washable liner, take the liner out and wash it - preferable using soap that doesn't stink, too.

Yeah.  I went to the store and tried a bunch on.  I mean the Shoei and Arai felt nice, but a little out of the price range, haha.  The HJCs seemed to have less force distribution on my noggin, and the Tarmac felt just right, almost like the Arai.  $140 at the store, $50 online.   :thumb:

I think the fan sounds like a good idea. Mmmm.  VOCs don't look like a good time.

Chew some minty gum in it?  :dunno_black:  :icon_lol:

The fan idea would seem to work best.

That might not be a bad idea...  Maybe put some mint spice in it with the fan going?  Decisions, decisions, haha.

I use the Automotive Febreeze. Yeah, they make it. I tolerate the new car smell over new helmet smell. But, geeze the 98% humidity summer in Florida smells well like A$$! Does anyone know how to get the liner out of a Shoei RF-1000? I can 90% of the liner out but at the front of the helmet it seems permantly attached  :dunno_white:
