So what happens if you run a V&H or Yosh exhaust on a stock bike? Will it run at all?
I'm only asking because I'm getting a Yosh full system and the person who is prepared to do the rejetting is an hour ride away. Unless I can ride the bike down with the exhaust in place I'll have to ship it to his house. No, I dont have the time to drive it down, drive back and ride down again.
I ran one month with the V&H before rejetting. It just popped a little more than usual on deceleration. That's with my '93. Not sure about your 01.
Maybe you can rise the needles before, that'll richen it up a little, and you only need to take off the gas tank and carb caps.
When I bought my '90 3 months ago it came with a full V&H system and stock jets. In fact I still haven't jetted the bike. The bike ran fine (plenty of power for a newbie like me - also didn't feel any hesitation in the entire rpm range) until I started tinkering with it (cleaned carbs and valve adjustment). I'm still trying to figure out what I did wrong. Of course I really don't have anything to compare it to. I'm wondering what kind of power I'll get when I do rejet, scary. Also my exhaust does pop a lot on decelleration but I've read this happens with all performance exhaust systems due to the rapid change in fuel/air ratio.
Hope that helps
You can ride it...It wont blow up..I'd suggest taking it easy and basically not run with a steady throttle...typically sppeding up, slowing down, speeding up slowing down etc hurt least with lean jetting. You can do the needle thing and that may do quite well. Or raise the float level a couple of mm. Whichever is easier...On my GS the floats are easier...nothing to take off. But I have allen bolts on my float bowls. So I can take them off wihtout touching anything else.
Cool.

Why no steady throttle? I'm going to be on the freeway for an hour at 90mph with this thing on. What happens with steady throttle?
are your mix screws still covered? if not turn them out a few more turns to richen it up.
Well steady throttle makes the mix leaner...which is why you get better gas mileage ... If you accelerate and at one point stop the opening of the throttle the rpm will climb rather quickly to a certain point and then slowly creep up..Probably takes a good 30 seconds after you stop feeling its accelerating...Its partly due to the air drag stabilizing, and other internal losses stabilizing or dropping off (remember the old physics theory...Moving something horizontal wihtout an increase in height...= no physical work done). Now that few dozen RPM will make the bike just that much leaner...so I'd try to accelerate and decelerate...when possible. That is also why bikes lean surge on steady throttle. When you are accelerating...basically when feeding the bike on open throttle you are using more of the jets ... Say you are at 2500 rpm ... and are at 1/8th throttle, you are supplying it with the pilots and air screw .. then you open the throttle ... and say are now at 1/2 throttle ... the bike is still running 2500 rpm... but its begining to climb...and you are supplying it with pilots, air screw and the needle... However the needle slowly takes over the fuel supply... as its starting to climb from 2500 the needle supplies a little cos the slide just begins to lift, as the slide lifts up to its steady state...the neelde is supplying a lot of fuel... Basically you want to have the needle send in more fuel than is needed at any time so open the throttle like you were accelerating. On shut throttle...all the bikes run very very lean by definition... cos its only using the idle circuit so dont worry about it. Also you may try running with the choke on 1/2 way or so...

it will go from....
wet fart to dry fart
not much diff from 37 to 39hp

I'm not so much looking for a performance boost without rejetting or pod filter as I am worried that I may damage something if I install the pipe to ride the bike down to Pauls house for rejetting. Sounds like I'll be fine just slapping that baby on and riding it for a while.
Pablo...do you actually think you can damage a rock?
GS won't care
just sputter on the off throttle...
Just a little extra heat...have a little choke on and ride on a cold part of the day and dont ride it too hard, and have good oil topped up in it.
Cool.
