Title: Problems after replacing clutch lever
Post by: jsspuler on June 03, 2009, 04:13:11 PM
So... I just installed an after market clutch lever. Well, after the installment, i discovered that it only starts with clutch out and in neutral. I took it for a test ride, and it stalled on me (I had to readjust the clutch cable) and it wouldnt restart in 1st gear with the clutch in and certainly not out. Then, i couldnt get the gear into neutral without putting the kick stand down. Luckily, this was just trying to get out of my apt complex and there were no cars behind me. I did some reading prior to replacing the lever and was careful not to brake the clutch safety switch or anything. Any ideas as to what I did, or how I could remedy this? I know that some of you prefer to start the bike without having to pull in the clutch, but considering Im a newbie and figuring the safety feature is there for a reason, Id rather have it back it for now. Also, I noticed that now the backlight on my speedometer doesnt work.

Hmmm, "After Market" clutch lever?  Maybe the clutch switch that is attached to the clutch perch is not working correctly with the clutch lever?  The switch has a little plastic nib that slips in and out of a divot in the clutch lever.  Check that, and maybe compare the OEM lever with your new one.

you have the connectors under the lever cross switch them over and you'll be fine.

did you remove the clutch switch when you removed the lever?  if not, I would say check the switch

I was thinking that maybe I crossed the connectors underneath but it looked like there is only way they'll go. Ill check again. Jeremy, what do you mean by switch? I had to take off that little box underneath to get the lever out but I put it back in. I did notice a little tab that slid back and forth and wasn't sure what position that was supposed to be in.

You can't cross the connections, and it wouldn't matter if you could - it's simply a switch, either connected or not. You can (and probably did) install the switch itself backwards, or with the tab not engaging the lever correctly.

The "little box" with the "tab that slides back and forth" is the clutch switch.

Thank  you all for your replies, I did indeed re-install it backwards and it was an easy fix. Im glad to say that order is restored. However, my speedometer backlight is still not illuminating so Im guess thats a seperate issue. Maybe the bulb is bad? I wouldve thought it was associated with the tach or oil pressure light.

Nope all lights are individual!
