Title: Emergency tool kit
Post by: BaltimoreGS on June 04, 2009, 04:48:22 PM
Hey, I think this is the most posts I've ever made here.  Slow night I guess.  Anyway, there was another post about basic maintenance tool requirements.  That got me thinking, what are the actual sizes of bolts regularly encountered on our bikes.  I recently upgraded some of my tools at work and I want to make a nice emergency tool kit for my tank bag.  Some things like a standard and Phillips screw drivers are a given.  I don't want to carry unnecessary tools though (i.e. 11mm socket and combo wrench).  Off hand I know I've regularly encountered 10mm and 12mm bolts.  I think my mirrors were an 8mm.  I seem to think I've had 14mm and 17mm but that may be my old Honda.  Anyone else have some more insight??  Thanks

-Jessie

8mm, 10 mm, 12 mm, 14mm, 17 mm,  19mm

18mm for the spark plugs

6mm Allen key/hex drive (say for fork realignment/handlebars if you have a minor mishap...) and it's either an 8 or a 10 mm hex drive for some brake caliper bolts

Will you be doing  emergency oil changes on the side of the road? (oil drain plug is 21 or 22mm...fuzzy at the moment on that one..)

Screwdrivers, small flashlight...shock preload adjuster...

And an adjustable ( small) JUST in case...if you have the room...

Instead of a flashlight, I recommend a head lamp. You can easily find LED headlamps for $20 or less.

Cool Jared.  One of the guys I ride with lives in Glen Burnie but we usually head North or West when we ride.
