Title: 3/4 throttle problem
Post by: tiptonmustang24 on June 06, 2009, 02:47:22 PM
Ok the bike accelerates very well. once i get to about 50mph and cruise at the speedlimit it bogs kinda like im running out of gas. i tried 50 in every gear and i tried 1/2 to 3/4 throttle in 4th 5th and 60th gear and it just seams to bog, so i have to give it more throttle to get back to the speed limit.......my floats are spot on(finally) i checked them using the tube method. Im running 150mains 40pilots with 1 washer, 3 turns out....i found out yesterday i had dynojet needles and the slides had been plugged so i purchased used carbs from somebody local and swapped out the oem stuff. could worn needles cause this? i don't know if they are worn though cause i didnt have anything to compare them to. Im running vance and hines supersport exhaust with k&N lunchbox. my exhaust pops when decellerating around 6k rpms

whats the plugs look like popping is usually a sign of a lean condition.

i havent checked the plugs yet. isnt it normal for aftermarket exhaust to pop? i read that somewhere on this forum i think

some mild popping on deceleration with the throttle closed is pretty common with aftermarket exhausts and I wouldn't worry about that.

Did the bike ever run correctly?  Why did you decide to rejet?  If you've swapped to stock stuff and used the jetting guide from wiki you should be running pretty close to ideal.  If it still runs like junk there might be other problems.

Have you tried putting it in prime? Sounds like petcock to me.

i tried runnin on prime but that didnt help. it happens in every gear, it doesn't matter what rpm im in, it just matters how much thottle is applied, it happends around 1/2 to 3/4 throttle.....i tried putting 2 washers in but that didnt help with the popping or the bogging

1/2 to 3/4 throttle is typically the needle shape or position (but sounds like you already knew that).  Since it pulls fine at WOT it's not the main.  Sounds like you're on the right track.  Maybe 3 washers?

well i still have no luck, it still bogs.....but its more around 1/3 to 1/2 throttle......i tried using the choke and that fixed it while im riding but i would rather fix it the right way, so i dont have to ride around with my choke on all the time....anyone have any ideas? Buddah how bout u?

I've read of Buddha answering this question several times.  Everyone else who has a V&H and a lunchbox is running 140 mains.  That's why it's bogging at larger throttle openings.  That's when your mains are coming on and taking over.  Your mains are too big.

im pretty sure buddah reccommends 150 mains, my bike is a 1993, its not bogging under full throttle so its not the mains problem anyway
