Title: Now I see why - '89 Clip-ons.
Post by: O.C.D. on June 18, 2009, 07:27:37 AM
Got a hold of some from INeedANap the other day.  Thank you again!  Was going to clean em up and paint them but I couldn't resist installing them last night.  A few beers later and it was simple as can be.     I am way more impressed with the looks of the GS with these on.  Cleans up the trees really well.  Plus it looks way more aggressive to boot.  The mirrors are off right now and I am debating leaving them off until I get bar ends.  Who knows.  Anyway, I thought I would share with you all.

Oh, the advance mod:

glad you like it.
Did you have a chance to ride it yet? I wonder if it's much more uncomfortable to ride with clip-ons  :dunno_white:

it depends on the rider; short arms, long arms, torso size....

i installed clipons on my gs and it was comfy and more sporty feeling. although for longer trips i'm sure the more upright handlebar style position would be more relaxing on the arms.

i have gsxr clipons now, and by god they are low. VERY low and almost uncomfortable..... but some people with sportbikes wouldnt have it any other way

Yeah, I think your comfort between bars is 90% based on how your ride, and 10% your size.

The bars may feel super low and uncomfortable if you are just taking it easy in traffic, parking lots, or taking back roads nicely in mid range RPMs, but if you're someone who's always leaning over as far as you can in turns, and always going as fast as you can on the highway, you're going to feel more comfortable with lower bars and as much of your weight over the front wheel as you can get it.

On my last bike I always wanted those bars to be lower. Now I'm thinking I'd much prefer to be sitting up a bit as I'm usually more in the mood to just take some graceful sweepers on back roads, at a much easier speed than when I was 19, not to mention plenty of city riding. I swear when I was younger it was a race every time I pulled out of the driveway.

On the 10% size side, Heather really likes the clipons because it makes the bike feel smaller to her, and she's not that tall as it is. It also makes the front end feel a little more stable over 50mph, even if you're not pushing yourself that hard. I remember when we got the GS and it still had the risers on it, I would shake the bars back and forth and the whole front of the bike would just shake back and forth because of the leverage, and the lack of weight on the front wheel, which is pretty uncomfortable for a new rider, even though I thought it was kind of fun.

I was not able to ride it last night as I had a few beers and am never gonna play that game on a bike!  But, Sitting on it I can definitely tell a difference in the position I will ride at.  The thing I was worried about is the more extreme angle of the grips pointing backward.  But I really like it and feel comfortable sitting on it.  Now after a 50 mile ride?!  Well, that remains to be seen.  I have pretty long arms at 6'-1" so it should be fine.  Over all I think it makes an average looking bike way more sporty and aggressive.

For those who want to know the timing plate mod does seem to work with the 06+ models, but not the rotor mod. I did this withthe help form bob brousard. I still need to do some checks and figure out how to check the exact timing but its on, it works, and feels a little more responsive.

They are from a 1989 GS500E.  That was the only year Suzuki made the GS500 with CLip-ons.  The next year they went to a different plate with clamp ons.

OCD - love it thw eay the tools are on the ... tank ... I also do that, just not the tank, seat, handle bar etc etc ...
Bolts and what not, will be in the tool box section ... A GS 500 is its own parts and tool caddy.
Cool.

The British market GS500s had clip-ons all the way up to at least 2000 (my bike).  They're slightly different to OCD's in that the bracket and handlebar holders are not all on piece as seems to be the case in OCD's picture, but are made up of the triple tree bracket with the handlebar holders each bolted to the bracket by two allen bolts a piece.  I passed my test on a Kawasaki ER-5, which had regular handlebars.  When I first took delivery of the GS500E I thought I might have made a mistake with the handlebar style.  But now I think it's great, although I have never ridden much more than 100 miles straight (my ass gets too painful with the bloody GS seat before my arms give out!).

Actually the bar clips are secured with two allens per side.

And Buddha - when I own a really expensive bike I will place the tools on the floor, I promise.

Aw heck, who my kidding it works well.

I think clip-ons look great but they wouldn't work for me.  My standard bars are comfortable, but I wouldn't want them any lower than they are.  If you had longer arms, you might feel differently.

A '92 with only 10k?  This bike has been waiting 17 years for someone to RIDE IT.  When will it get its wish?

another quick dumb question (thanks for the speedy responses on the last!)

will those clip ons fit well on an f model and still allow the full fairing and everything to stay the same?

I think the clip ons do interfere with the "F" models but there are ways to rig them so they won't hit the fairing.

I've been toying with this mod for a while! But, I have tendonitis in my right wrist so  :dunno_white:

Mary - your dear GSTwins husband was worried sick about you.

I am making the jigs to do it as we speak.
Cool.

if you want a bit more of the aggressive look, you can take those clipons and flip them upside down ("Flipons" I call them ;) )

I like the riding position but it does make the bike look a bit like a cartoon mammoth   :icon_mrgreen:....

I have clip-ons on my '93 GS and I have a slightly mis-healed broken right wrist.
On longer rides I can feel discomfort in my right wrist, but it doesn't hurt.
Now, I'm about 6'4" so I may have more weight on my hands than shorter people and that may also contribute to the disconfort.

UK spec clipons differ from the US 89 in the rise parts are longer so the riding position is less agressive than the us spec, but the extra height shoud help with clearances.

I like 'em I think they will be on the list for one day! Or if I find some as an irresistable deal!
