Title: Could use a little idle help!
Post by: loudog on June 20, 2009, 07:01:34 PM
I could definitely use a little help. Here's the skinny.

I bought a 1994 GS with 12,000 miles at the end of last season. I rode it around a few miles and tucked it away for winter (with stabil in the gas).

I pulled it out for this season a little while ago and it ran well. Then, I left the petcock in "prime" by accident and flooded my garage with 1+ gallon of fuel. While cleaning that up, I half dropped the bike onto my boat trailer. So, the bike ended up landing on a 45 degree angle.

Ever since then, I believe, the bike behaves as follows:

I start it with choke, and it idles well at about 3-4K rpms.

As it warms, I slowly release the choke and the idle drops accordingly. Once, it gets warm, the rpms drop to about 1,200 and then the bike tries to stall. I can blip the throttle to keep it going, but it won't stay running by itself until I adjust the idle speed all the way to 3K rpm. It runs well at higher rpms.

Any ideas? Did I knock something loose in the carb when I dropped it? Did a seal crack during the winter? Any ideas are appreciated.

Thanks,

Lou

Update:

It started right up this morning, as usual. When it was idling around 3-4K rpms, it was backfiring a little bit. Then it stalled out as described above.

But, I noticed the exhaust smelled very potent.

Not burning all fuel? Mixture too rich, bad gas?

Sounds like something wrong with the mixture. Maybe the choke is giving a rich mixture because its not closing properly. When you operate the choke lever it opens a valve to let in more fuel as well as opening the throttle a little to increase the idle speed. I'd carefully check the choke system.

Try checking the needle and seat for the float, too.  It may be sticking partially open in one of your carbs.

Thanks for the replies. I will make sure to check choke/float and mixture.
