Title: rpm guage wavering
Post by: sappy13 on June 24, 2009, 10:18:55 PM
In the last day or 2, i have noticed that my rpm guage keeps jumping between rpms, especially at high speeds.  I think its just the guage, cause the engine does not feel any different when it does this, so i dont think the engine is actually jumping in rpms.  Its mostly at highway to interstate speeds also for the most part.  Any ideas how to fix this, kinda annoying seeing my guage constantly wavering between 6k and 10k at 80 indicated, lol

thanks in advance,
Jeremy

If it's a 02 or older GS it could be a simple matter of lubeing the cable to fix it.  The 04 and later models have electric tachs without a drive cable.

Hi there,
When my 1991 GS500E did this a couple years ago, I replaced the tach cable with a new one.
End of wavering problem.
Parts do wear and lube goes away.
A new tach cable was cheap and easy to replace.
Good luck

Both times I had a jumping tach needle the cable was broken an inch or so behind the front axle.  Two different bikes.

If it's an electric tach, disconnect, clean, and reconnect all connections from the tach to the engine.

I Recently had this problem with my '07 F w/ 5000km on it. It would do it intermittently and then stop for some time (approx. 10-15mins), then wold return, speed gear or rpm's did not make a difference. So i went about poking around and ended up taking out  the tach. from the gauge cluster and checked all the connections, found nothing wrong. Then i found where the wiring harness connects on the LHD ( looking form the rear) side of the bike. I unplugged it and cleaned with a air compressor. So far 300km later all seems to be working fine.

I had that same problem. Since, it was covered by my warranty they just replaced it. Hope you don't have to get a new one!
