I knew it was going to go eventually. I hadn't been riding since I knew it was bad. But my buddy called and wanted to hit up some twisties. So I went...and while we were messing around at a roundabout, this happened.
And holy hell...I thought our bikes were light until I had to lift it into a truck by myself. I had buddies helping me stabilize it, but I had to lift it myself. Whooo.....I'm going to hurt tomorrow. I guess I'm stronger than I thought.
Good news is though...when I posted it on my local board, a guy piped in saying he's got a 520 chain that I can have for free. Its 113 links, so I'm gonna grind it down to 109 (ive got a 14 tooth sprocket to put on). So free new chain! And I'll actually oil the new one. Might actually get an auto oiler thingy.
Oh yeah. You can't see it very well, but look what it did to the adjuster plate. It also sheared off half of one of the nuts holding on the sprocket. Just cut clean in half. Crazy!
You rode with a chain in that bad a condition?
Yep....I hadn't been riding at all lately because of it, but my buddy called and I gave in because I wanted to ride. So I chanced it. Oh well....it was a fun experience.
:cookoo: That could have very well cost you your life! That's why you maintain things :whisper: Please go over the rest of your bike if that is how your chain looks I can't imagine what else could be rusted through!

This thread reminds me I need to clean my chain. I rode it about 700 km without doing it.
You should change the sprockets to, those don't look good either.
>:( you're crazy for riding with a chain like that :icon_eek:
i have some wheel adjusters and drive sprocket hubs if your in need.....and it looks like your in need.
If it wraps the rear sproket to the swingarm and you'd lose your @$$.
Sveach - On the bright side - your stupidity brought the frost out of hiding.
Frost - How you been - one of my buddies moved up to your neighborhood - St Catherines's ON.
Bug him - his handle here is joystick - Though he's back in the US this weekend.
Cool.

+1
I use PJ-1 "Black Label" on my chains. You should do the same. It's good lube.
No Excuse for THAT chain.
My routine: Tank up in the morning and check the tire pressure immediately after - every time I tank up. When I get home I lube the chain. Tires in the morning with the go-go juice and lube in the afternoon when I get home. Every time. Ritualistic. I KNOW it's been done that way (only takes a minute to lube the chain - and more often than spec ain't gonna hurt it)
I've tried dirt bike lubes, road lubes, my manufacturers preferred lube. They all give flingage. I started using wd40 and have a nice clean chain without flingage. 9k of wd40 use and no mechanic has noticed anything odd. Of course, I do a lot of mileage so am lubing at least once a week and on some weeks two lubes as I tank up twice.
Have considered using something called INOX - it's Not petroleum based - but the chain version is up there in price like normal bike chain lubes. And I haven't been able to compare ingredients of standard INOX with the chain version to see if it's the same in a different can. So I'll keep with my wd40.

+1 on that, you deserve all you got. No sympathy from me.
Geez, there's rust dust all over the rear wheel. That chain must have sounded like fingernails on a chalk board. :o
I guess the fact that you were close to running out of adjustment on the chain tensioners didn't make a connection??? :cookoo:
Imagine what that would have been like if the rear wheel locked up on the freeway with a semi bearing down your back in the center lane...
:icon_eek:Lol, geeeezzz. looks like your bike needs a bit of attention. Those, uhhh, sponge things with soap on them work really good from what I hear.... :thumb:
I can't believe you'd allow your motorcycle to be in this condition.
Amazing, simply amazing.
A front to back, top to bottom inspection, lubrication, service and adjustment process is definitely in order.
I wouldn't trust that bike with my life.
And neither should you.
Really, what were you thinking man?
We'll help you, but you need to do the work and pay some attention.
Best wishes,
Trwhouse
