Title: Legality of transporting GS in a Uhaul
Post by: lilbill on June 28, 2009, 04:03:44 PM
Does anyone know of the legal issues involved in transporting a motorcycle INSIDE of a Uhaul box truck?  I'm moving soon and trying to figure out a way to get the bike there with me.  Trailering is not an option.

I figure on needing to drain the fuel...anything else?
Thanks folks!

Definitely not illegal to the best of my knowledge.  I would suggest tying her down real good with some quality ratcheting straps.  2 on each side will keep you bike rock steady.  Check and ratchet up the slack(if any) whenever you stop for fuel.  Oh, and leave the bike in gear.....I wouldn't drain the fuel.  Just turn the petcock OFF.

I don't think it's illegal - I know you can't transport one in a POD, because I asked them about it recently. But in a box truck should be fine.

Legal from what I understand.

I don't think there's anything illegal about transporting it in a uhual.  I mean I think most racers transport in the same sort of closed trailer.  You might ask the uhual guy or read the fine print carefully to see if they have any issues.

Yeah, ratchet it down on both sides with the front wheel against the front of the box so the front forks are compressed.  That'll hold it nice and steady.  It's legal to transport a lawnmower in a U-Haul, so why not a bike?  I wonder why you'd think it might not be.  That's what trailers, trucks, and vans are for, and you don't have to drain the tank, but it's not a bad idea if you want to.

Ive done it before. Not illegal to my knowledge

The main legal issue is that the bike must either be yours, or you must have the permission of the owner to transport it.

Might be against company policy, depending on the company, but it's perfectly legal.  You're not subject to commercial motor carrier regulations in a rented moving truck under 16,000 GVW.  It's just a big pickup truck.  No need to drain the tank, unless you're afraid of a petcock leak.  I never have...

I would not rent a U-haul unless it had a wood floor.  Drill four holes in the wooden floor and install 7/16" eye bolts.  Use the eye bolts to install your straps.  Strictly against company policy and all that, but they never check other than looking in the back to see if you swept it out.  Fill with plastic wood after, if you're feeling generous.   :D

haha, good god, did that truck not come with a ramp? I would've driven the thing straight up in there. I'm sure if I had a fork lift I'd look for reasons to pick things up too though.

I had thought there were issues with having fuel tanks in closed trucks/trailers that don't have vents on the vehicle.  Thanks for all of the reinforcement! :thumb:  I wish I had a forklift!

I agree with this thinking, I know you can't transport containers of fuel. Although, I have shipped my bike in a box truck from NY->OH and OH->Miami, no problems.

Just check on it whenever you stop, open the door and vent all the fumes manually

U-haul, schmoo haul
use a Ford windstar, and make sure you have a camry engine to take up all the extra room in there:

You haul us just the middle name in the series of names.
Its a metaphor -
The right full version is - U pack, U load, UHAUL, U suffer, U die.
So since the bike could help you suffer and die - with their dinky ramps and lack of strapping hooks its a definete possiblity -
But once you get it to your location and its out, then the bike will be a great use to you. That right there is Illegal I am sure.
Cool.
Buddha.

Easier I'm sure, but I always see trucks like that parked on the side of the street downtown with the ramps on them and all I can ever think about is how fun it would be just to ride straight up into one.

you're kidding, right ? it has:

a big truck
motorcycles, in different stages of assembly
tie straps
a forklift
duct tape
that may be a pear tree in the background, so all we need is a partridge.... :D

it's perfectly legal as far as I know.  Just be careful not to end up like this dude and its easier to do than you would think ramp load FAIL! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UkQYYBOrRNk)

First off, sweet forklift picture! I just got forklift certified at work (and I'm a programmer, I love my job), I'm going to have to keep that trick in mind next time I have to move my GS anywhere.

As for transporting a GS in a Uhaul, go for it! I actually rent box trucks on a semi regular basis, and I always return them by tossing my GS in the back and just unloading it when I get to where I have to drop the truck off. Unloading the bike right in front of the guys I'm returning it to doesn't phase them at all. I don't recommend Uhaul in general though, their trucks are awful and their prices aren't even that good, once you factor in mileage. Go for a local place, you will be so much happier. The place I go to is cheaper than Uhaul and has super nice trucks with lift gates instead of ramps, which makes loading and unloading things like motorcycles way easier!

You know how to pick up a quarter with a forklift, right?

That should have been a part of your training.   :tongue2:

Agreed on the no U-haul comment.  They have aluminum decks anyway.  Far harder to molest for motorcycle tie downs.  I recommend Budget or Penske.
