hi, i was just wondering if anyone knows of any way to lock your helmet to your bike so you dont have to carry it around everywhere. ive seen some crochrockets fly past me on the road and the rider isnt wearing a helmet, but lo-and-behold, there is a hemlet securly locked to the side of the seat behind them. does anyone know of a system like that, that will work on the GS500? im getting tired of going down the block for quick runs to the store and having to carry my helmet into the store.
There are two helmet hooks under the seat. Check the wiki.

wow, lol now i feel like an idiot. :cookoo:
I stumbled across it on the wiki by accident one day. Before then I just carried my helmet around as well.
Don't feel too bad. I was thinking the same thing today "how do I lock my helmet to the bike?" I haven't even searched to see if there was a way and couldn't figure out what those hooks were for.
DOH!
and our GS apparently has a nice metal helmet lock. my buddie's r6 is just a plastic tab. :dunno_white:
cheers,

Even though the bike does have a helmet lock I still carry my helmet around with me. I find I can also use it to put stuff in when shopping :icon_mrgreen: And walking through a shopping center with helmet and jacket garners more Space from other shoppers - wearing a vest with patches works even better :thumb:
Also, by having my helmet on me I won't come back to find some dipstick has sliced my straps either off or partially or has poured some beverage into my helmet or in any other way sabotaged it.

Hehe, I knew about the helmet locks before I even went to look at my GS. I thought it was the coolest little feature. I use it if I'm not going far from my bike for long. I also just use reason when looking at the forecast and guess when it may or may not get filled with water. Around here, I'd say in general people are alright and aren't going to cut my straps off or fill it with any undesirable liquid. I find my helmet gets lets abuse from other people if I leave it locked on the bike. The spot for the toolkit in the back also doubles as a great glovebox as well. :thumb:
Since I added saddlebags to my GS, the lock for the seat has been a real hassle to get to so I haven't been able to use my helmet lock. I really miss it.
Now I use the strap to tie it to the grab handle and then pass a cable lock through it, which is not nearly as convenient.
The other reason I like carrying my helmet with me, is that security doesn't give you glares for wearing a backpack into stores when you're in the suburbs for a day. Apperantly "guy with backpack" is on their bad list.
Yup, TT it is a red flag for security. Usually, it means said person doesn't have a car if said person doesn't have a car means probably doesn't have a job which means probably doesn't have money which means can't afford being in the store which in turn means the bag will most likely end up full and he's not paying for it. I know sounds kinda harsh and bad but yup that's what we are taught. (Why I will never work retail security) I may be a Mickey Mouse cop (ahem Universal that is) But I will never be a Mall Cop!
I always carry my helmet too. Had a friend had his pissed in nice people eh?

Add me to the dumb list. I went as far as to add an aftermarket helmet lock on my frame before someone pointed out those neat factory ones to me :embarrassed:

Yeah, mine doesn't have them anymore, I'm gonna have to see if I want to figure out a way to put some on, or I may just buy a small lock to lock the helmet to the fork leg or something for couple minute runs into the store.
Yeah Mary, I get followed all the time. It's obnoxious, but I understand why I'm the easy target. I always have a backpack because I live in the city, and 95% of the time I'm on a bicycle or I'm walking. People down here are used to it and never bug me, but my parents live in the whitest suburb on this side of the state, and the thought of someone over 16 years old walking or riding a bicycle is unheard of, considering life in the suburbs is equal to social status. Either way, I'm the one who's actually in good shape from walking and biking everywhere, so if I was a thief, I'd like to see someone try to chase me anyway :flipoff:
I'm pretty used to the attention at this point though, when I was in high school I used to have a mohawk, and everything I owned had patched and studs on it. They didn't even follow me back then, they'd just tail me 15 feet behind, as if they thought I was so stupid that I didn't know I was gonna get watched anyway.
And by the way, I don't know if I've ever brought it up here before.... my name is Josh
tt_four/Josh- If I can still find the keys to the aftermarket one I added you are welcome to it. I should also add, if I can easily remove it too. I think it came with one way security screws but I don't think I used them when I put it on. Been a long while, memory is fuzzy...

Hey, that'd be awesome! At this point I'm still trying to figure out how to get my back end organized so I can actually have a semi decent undertail on it, so it wouldn't be hard to incorporate a helmet lock in there while I'm at it. The tail I got to replace the stock fairings works well enough, but the plastic right behind the front seat goes too low for the stock undertail, is a couple inches wider, and also is just a little short on the front half to be even with the bottom of the subframe, so it'll be a while of cutting sheet metal, chopping up the stock undertail, some rivets, and whatever else I need. Someday when I learn how to do fiberglass I can come up with something nice.
Hey Josh, found the keys and took the lock off today. There is a little damage to one of the mounting tabs but you can use it as is or JB Weld it. I also save the pieces of conduit I use to protect the frame. The screws are SAE not metric, ust be mant for a Harley. PM me where to ship it.
