Greetings brothers and sisters:
My family and I are moving abroad to Hong Kong from NJ and I was debating whether or not I was going to take my GS. I decided to bring it along and deal with the relocation business of it all later. This is my first bike and i love it! After moving all of my things onto a 40' container, the movers loaded the bike. I put it on its center stand and we covered it with padded moving blankets. The movers then built this custom crate using 2x4s all around for stability. It was pretty interesting actually. I forgot to mention i took a nice long 2 hour + tour the previous day to empty to gas tank almost entirely, i washed the bike and greased the hell out of the chain. We used a ramp to get it into the container. I will have to deal with some importation fees, registration fees, and noise testing when i arrive but its all part of the fun i guess.
This was an interesting process and I just thought i would share it for fun .

Get an international DL from AAA before you go. I know you will be moving there and will eventually get a local DL but at least you can drive as soon as you get there.

Already did! :thumb: Hopefully it won't be too much paperwork to get it registered and all that jazz....Getting used to driving on the left side of the road will take a bit of getting used it as well.
Couldn't give up the GS...to much fun! Gotta make it work! :woohoo: At least I will have a toy when i get there. :rstar:
That's good you can just transfer it over there. I read something on sportbikerider.us about some guy in hong kong who fixed up this ninja 400 for his wife, thing looked gorgeous, but they were moving back to the US and he said it wouldn't be possible to make it legal here. I wonder what the difference is.
I'm sure they know what they're doing, because they move stuff all the time, but that's the most random motorcycle protection I've ever seen. I would've just put some anchors in the floor to strap the bars down like on a trailer or in the back of a truck, and then built a frame around the bike, but like I said, they're the professionals.
I know, i was a bit skeptical myself at first, but it is "sandwiched" in there really well and as you know, the bikes are pretty stable on their center stand. It is fully insured in the event of anything breaking. They are the "pros" like you said....It should be ok.
wow this is pretty cool! i think it is definitely a good idea to bring the bike. my wifey is from hong kong and from what she tells me, it's pretty much a very crowded area (well, at least most of it) and using the bike to get around will be less of a headache.

Thanks...gas in NJ is about $2.50 per gallon these days....in Hong Kong it's about $7.50 per gallon!!!! :mad: :cookoo:

Pros or no Pros, at the very least a strap Should have been added to the front of the bike on the container's existing strap down loops - all containers have them and you can even see one on the side of the container near the floor in your pic. BUT, if You are happy with the security of the bike then it's all good.

Yeah, I didn't assume anything would happen to it, I just think they made way more work for themselves than they needed to.
I'm sure you'll figure it out when you get there. I probably would've sold my bike and taken that as my chance to get one of the sweet smaller bikes that you can't ever get in this country....
