hi,

Will Avon AM23 170/80/17 fit on GS500E without any problem?

More like many problems.
Stock size is 130. You can put on a 140 or sometimes a 150 but there is not much of a point. Do some searching, there is loads of info on tire stuff.

I'm no tire expert, but I see no reason why it shouldn't fit. Stock I think is 130/70? I'm running a 140/80 and its fine, although nearly impossible to use all of the tire.
However, as far as I know nobody has talked about using it on a GS. Is it radial or bias ply? Try not to mix them, the GS comes with bias ply tires.

Why is using radial and bias ply together bad? Could you tell me more?

Radials and Bias Ply tires deform differently under load. As I understand it, this causes them to have very different handling characteristics which can cause them to react differently when cornering.

Here is a direct quote from the March 2008 Cycle World magazine:

Q: I'm confused. I have a couple of riding friends who are pretty savvy when it comes to motorcycles, and they tell me you should never mix radial and bias-ply tires on the same bike. My dealer, however, says it's okay as long as I use the same brand of tires on both wheels. So, what's the deal? Is either one of these claims correct or are both wrong?

A: Although there is some truth to both of these explanations, neither is entirely accurate. Years ago, back when radial motorcycle tires first hit th market, tiremakers strongly advised riders not to mix radial and bias tires. Radials were new and offered significantly different handling characteristics than bias rubber, and neither the bike manufacturers nor the tire companies yet had enough model- and tire-specific data to predict how a combination of the two would affect the handling of any given motorcycle. So the best policy was to discourage miing radials and bias tires.

Since then, radial technology has evolved dramatically, and the manufacturers have had years to develop a better understanding of the effects of mixing tire types. As a result, numerous production bikes, including two new models tested in this issue - the Harley-Davidson Rocker and the Yamaha Star Raider S - come from the factory equipped with a radial on the rear and a bias-ply tire on the front.

This is not to say it's okay to put any radial and any bias tire on any motorcycle; that could have results running the gamut from awesome to aweful. The bike and tire companies have spent millions of dollars and, probably thousands of man-hours determining the feasibility of mixing tire types. So the question is, do you want to open your own R&D department and become the primary test rider? Because unless you follow the recommendations of your bike's manufacturer or of the tire companies, that's exactly what you will be doing.

A bias front with a radial rear can be ok but a radial front with a bias rear is a no-no, can cause serious oversteer when pushed close to the limit.

Is AM23 a bias ply tire?
I am looking for about that and all I found out was that it has a kevlar ply inside.

A 130/80-17 tire will fit your GS500, I've used several rears that size.  Why a AM23?  No longer listed on the Avon site it appears to be discontinued now.  Make sure your not getting an outdated tire.  It's a bias ply tire, BikeBandit still has them listed:

I run a bt45 front, which is bias, and a bt21 rear, which is radial.  have no handling problems, and I'm going all the way to the edge of my 160-60-17.
