So i got a DID professional chain 520V oring. Being a newb.. i thought it would come all together.. I didnt think you had to break the chain to take it off a bike. So i says to myself: Well ifyou are buying a 110 link chain. it should automatically be all together. Well that is not the case. Apparently you need a chain riveter. It came with a clip but on the back of the box it also states "While this does come with a clip, we STRONGLY recommend you use a riveter." :mad:
So i called shops and cost will be 70 dollars and up to 140 for professional grade. Anyone around seattle, bothell, everett that has a motorcycle chain rivetor I can drive over and use? If no one then i will buy, then in the future you guys can come over and use mine. :thumb:
I won't start the clip vs rivet debate again, but I will say i prefer rivet. And the only reason I don't have my own riveter is because I work in a bike shop and get to use one for free. Tools like that pay for themselves again and again over the years. Borrow if it is convenient, but a good chain tool kit is definitely worth the money.

Yeppers. We have a Motion Pro tool that breaks and rivets, and it's seen plenty of use.
Keep your eyes out for used tools like that on the local Craigslist or on eBay, if you don't want to pay retail.
Replacement chains come with either a clip type or a rivet type connecting link or both in some cases. I've used seven DID 520V o-ring chains on my GS500s and they all came with a clip type connecting link which I used with no riveting necessary. The continous oem chain can be cut off with a hacksaw. Those high grade white hack saw blades from Lowes will walk right thru a chain.
I plan to take this bike to track days and i always always try to go on the fast side. Just for that, i think i will get a riveter. Not trying to start a which one is better thread.. i already made up my mind for a riveter. Thanks for your inputs. No takers in seattle area.. oh well. guess its off to stealership.
That being said.. since i am getting a riveter.. Any tips? Pitfalls i need to ensure i dont get myself into? Its a $90+ dollar chain and i dont want to mess it up on my first try. know on wood.

You're worrying too much. Riveting a chain is easy and the tool comes with instructions. :D
Don't worry if you do happin to make a mistake. It's not the end of the world. You can always remove the damaged rivet link and start over. Replacements are less than $10. (don't ask me how I know that either)
If you really really screw up and damage the chain, you can remove those end links that were damaged. That would leave you with a perfectly good 106 or 108 link chain that you could sell to someone who needed it.
