Hey Im from Ontario Canada and just picked up a 1989 GS500 twin with 58000 km on it. ive notice the bike dosent really have any throtle reasponce untill 6000 RPM. So im cutting a larger intake hole and installing a 4inch diamiter K&N filter from my 2005 Honda TRX450R race quad. I am also installing a custom made exhaust system with the same diamiter piping but it will have dual mufflers the mufflers will ony be about 3inch diamiter each and 10 inches long each, they will each have a 2 in diamiter perferated core and will be packed with 4 stroke high heat exhaust paching aslo from my trx450R.
My question is what would be a good starting point as for the Jetting of the bike ( just somthing to give me an Idea of where I should be playing with the jetting at. like a ball park figure so I dont need to get an entire new jet kit.)
I have removed the brakets that stick down with the litle nipples for whatever they are for on the tail of the bike, cut off the brackets for the tail light that where atached to these pieces. bent the tail light brackets and installed them where the back of the seat sets on the frame, thus moving my tail light back about 5-6 inches inwards. I had to cut the splash guard apart for this. You may wonder where my rear turning lights went then? I purchased and intergrated LED tail light with signal lights built in.
I am also cuttin about 2 inches along the side of each back plastic panel so that the panel will be flush with the lower part of the tail of the frame. giving a more pitched rear end.
I also lowerd the seat about an inch to give the tail end a more sharp look. this was all to make the rear end of the bike get real narow at the end like the look of new street bikes out there.
Is there any lift kits I can purchas? I would like to lift the rear of the bike about 2-3 inches. to get the tire further away from the fender.
Finaly Im looking for new headlight options for the front. I would like to keep the bare look of the bike since im making it a street fighter, just the huge single head light in the front looks super ghey. Is there any dual round headlight otions available with HIDs? and im looking for a digital intergrated tack and speedo instead of having the two dial guages.
The entire frame will be powder coated matt black, the pipes will be ceramic coated chrome, the tank, rear panels and from fender will be painted high gloss tangerine (general lee) orange, and the motor will be polished cleaned, painted black and my have powder coated orange stator and clutch cover.
here are the pics of the bike in its stock for without anything done to it yet. this is the way I purchased it. I will post pics of all my progress as I go.
Any info will be greatly apreciated!! Sry for typing do much lol first post.

Oh man, as I was reading that, I was going to say a lot of the questions could be answered better on customfighters.com, such as what dual headlights are good, but then as I got to the pictures, I realized I just told you on customfighters to come to GStwin.
Anyway, yeah I'd like some new gauges as well. They're not bad with riser bars, or even your clipons, but I have clipons under the top clamps (lower than in the picture) and my gauges are sticking up into the middle of nowhere. I would assume any old tach and speedo would work because they're just using those spinning wires, but I don't know much about it, and I know even less about electrical.
As far as changing the height, they do make links for the suspension to adjust the height, but a lot of people replace the stock shock with one of the yellow SV650 shocks, which if I remember right, people have said raises the rear about 2 inches, and you could most likely get one for the same price, of not cheaper than the links, plus then you'd have a better shock.
I've also thought about doing some painting. I think I'm just going to paint bars on the front that go in front and below the engine flat black so they blend into the engine a little better. I don't think I'm going to pull the whole bike apart though, I'll probably just tape off the engine and spray paint them. Think they get hot enough to use high temp paint, or should I just use some Rustoleum?
You're gonna have to wait for Buddha to come a long for the jetting advice.
I'll be interested to see the tail, I kinda followed that, but it sounds like there's a lot going on... I just cut up my back end a little and stuck an 1 piece tail from a '99 R1 on it, which I think helped the looks a lot. It's not the best, but it works. Now I need to find one of the newer tanks to make it look a little graceful, not to mention the tank doesn't feel all that great without the lip on the front of the seat. The back edges are a bit too pointy for my legs.

The search button is your friend.
Hi there,
If you want to sell your stock clip-on handlebars, let me know.
I am looking for a set in case I decide to try them out.
Thanks,
Trwhouse
Good, you got an 89, OK no changes neccesary, its already a street fighter. Thank go you didn't buy a GSXR and want to make it a street fighter ... wheeew ...
Your mods ...
4 inch filter in the air box from a honda quad, lovely, you'd need to rejet, and I will tell you the mains (only change needed) you need to run, and it aint gonna do much for the performance, except make it dirty to run.
The air box is the problem, toss it in favor of a lunch box and it will run a lot better and just as dirty.
With air box K&N you need 127.5 mains, on a canada bike of that vintage its +1 from stock.
With lunch box and pipe, its 150 mains.
Then ... here is the kicker ... 58,000 kilometers is a lot, its an ungodly awful amount. What is your oil useage like. I was burning a qt in 300 miles and it ran with a lot less power than the ones with lower miles.
The body mods should all coincide with your engine work I would think, till winter though, just ride it.
I used to live in canada and "I dyno'ed" my bike on the 407. Oxygen sensor and 2 way speed runs baby.
Cool.

:icon_eek: ok what?? you lost me. the bike dosent burn any oil. so what if I just got a K&N filter for the air box ( the apropriat one) and built custom pipes what jetting am I looking at then? I only need to change the mains? How big can you bore this bike out? Ive done alot of work on race quads can I do somthing like it? (high compression pistons, big bore, web cams, port polish, overseized valves, flo tested head, strocker crank kits, ) LOL ok that a litle overboard but thats what in my quad.
All im doing for now is just K&N and custom pipes. I will only need to change the mains is that right?
thanks alot

buddha...is there anywhere you haven't lived?
you should check the rejetting matrix in the wiki. it won't be perfect since it's a custom exhaust, but it'll give you a good idea where to start.
Dlight: I have lived in South India, PA/NJ, WA/ID, south FL, Boston MA, Northern CA, Toronto CA, Northern CA, Charlotte NC, Houston TX and Charlotte NC in that order.

K&N Filter in air box is still going to be choked. I would seriously think of a clamp on filter as the only way to get more air in. K&N in air box - 127.5, K&N lunch box = 150. Assuming yours is not some funky US market import.
Bore etc, well depends on what you can buy pistons for ... more power from displacement is a whole other game. Check with dgyver and search though his posts first.
The holy grail is ... were there is 2 holy grails I would say, the 4 valve 400 that suzuki made, head is supposedly a driect bolt in, you get 4 valve heads that way and you can run any bore you can get/make pistons for.
#2 is - swap with a 650 GR motor. Its a torqueier motor with a 2 stage flywheel, you will make more torque down low and it is supposed to be revved only to 8500 rpm, it also is a 5 speed, but you could gear it right to make 140 mph being boring as hell, 125-130 mph while being a good fun bike or a 110 mph blaster.
You wont burn oil, but its level will drop inexplicably. You also will get a lot of blow by from the valve cover gasket, if not, 1, it may have been rebuilt. 2, It may have that extended life due to the stock airbox it has had and the pipe too.
Anyway K&N in airbox and pipe = 127.5 mains, only chnage needed if its a canadian market bike, and I'll sell you a set for $10 shipped to canada. A whole pack is 25 bucks - make it 27 to canada. You need that only if its a US bike.
Cool.
