Title: I need to do something to my exhaust......help! R6 EXHAUST???
Post by: jonathanneely on July 24, 2009, 03:26:05 PM
Ok, so I bought my GS a little over a month ago, an 07. I love it! The previous owner moded the stock exhaust by removing the cone off the end and removing the baffle. He evidently used a JB Weld type adhesive to put the cone back on...it fell off. Well, I got another canister from Quiktaco, sawed off the cone, and used an exhaust adhesive compound to replace the cone. It lasted a couple of days. I yanked and jerked on that cone the day after I put it on there and it wasn't coming off! The adhesive is rated for 2000 degrees so I thought everything was just dandy. Well, it ain't! I have an exhaust with no cone on the end and an exposed gaping 4" hole....   it sounds good though  :D

Question: I've read on the Wiki GS500 page that an early model R6 exhaust (98 - 01) is a fit for the GS. Just cut a couple inches from the 2 in 1 junction and slide it on? Correct? Has anyone done this or know anything about it?

No matter what, don't use an exhaust meant for a ricer Civic. I already know how bad you'll get flamed for doing that . . . .

get a full exhaust and be done. there are tons of jardine, v&h, and other recommendations (helllllo wiki) that won't cough a mortar into the person behind you.

sure, it costs money. so ? :)

i have an r6 exhaust, however mine may have been from a later model. Exhaust shop had to shorten and rotate the slip portion 45 degrees.

Buy a can of Campbells soup, or one the same diameter.

Eat soup.

Remove rim at top of can - it's "just" too big. Most tedious part of whole process - 3 whole minutes with pliers.

Slide can onto exhaust.

Apply stainless hose clamp to can.

Poke as many or as few holes as suit your desired sound, in a pattern you like.

A nail works dandy.

Paint if you like. Get another can if you poke too many holes. The close-up pictures vanished somewhere. I may yet go for the smiley face ;-)

If i'm not mistaken, . . . . you cut that 'gs' on the frame out of a gsx-r sticker, no?

I have no idea - I relocated it when I repainted the bike and removed 99.5% of the stickers on it. If I ever get around to the full repaint it won't even admit to being a Suzuki, much less a GS - it will be as totally de-branded as I can get it.
I think one of the before pics is still on the GS server, let's see...

Not a great deal of detail (I think those stickers are below the big S on the tank), but you get the flavor of what it started like. I'd say the spiffy styling job took $200 off the price...
