Title: Damn battery!!
Post by: Iron-Man on July 28, 2009, 01:26:52 AM
What up guys!

just wanting to get some feedback and info on a battery problem i had yesterday....

i went out to my bike to go to work, the lights came on, it TRIED to turn over but it was a poor effort, unfortunatly i didnt really have time to start messing around. so i got a taxi and dwelled on it all day.

got home, got the multi-meter out, checked the fuse and all the connections and nothing!...i left it for a bit because i was getting a little worked up then thought "cant hurt to take the battery out" and then i got my answer, there seemed to be little if any fluid in the battery!

now i havent looked at that part of the battery in about 3-4weeks now and each chamber was between lower and upper level so my question is, how often should i be checking this?...the battery has only really had 1years use if that helps.

Thanks

Have you checked the voltage of the battery while revving? If you've got a faulty regulator it could be sending too much voltage to your battery causing your electrolyte to boil off. That is assuming you didn't lose any caps on your battery. I had that happen to me and in the span of a couple months lost practically all the electrolyte in one cell, ruined the battery.

I've not checked the voltage when revving no but i can when i get home...what should the voltage be when revving?

i've not lost any of the caps thankfully and there are no signs of the electrolyte leaking out of the over flow pipe, then again that could have been happening when i was out sunday. there was light rain so i wouldnt really be able to tell if it had boil off

Thanks

About a year ago I couldn't figure out what was wrong with mine either. I had so little fluid from dropping my bike. Added distilled water to each hole, and good as new.

my repair manual calls for between 13.5 and 15.5 volts dc at 5000 rpm

Hey,

I didnt get to check out wether it was over charging till the other day and it was putting out between 16-17v on the battery when about 5k/rpm.
i'm pretty sure my battery is screwed now as once again its got little to no fluid in it and the chambers kinda look rusty now.

i've got myself a new battery but obviously dont want to put it on the bike untill i've sorted out any over charging issues so was wondering if there were any posts on here about how to fix this fault or if not if someone could point me in the right direction so i can fix this myself = )

it would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

I would recommend replacing the Rectifier/regulator.  Ebay.  Or post a WTB in the For Sale/Wanted section.

i'm gunna go take a look and make sure that it is definatly a fault with the rec/reg, found a good flow chart for testing it.

http://www.thegsresources.com/garage/gs_statorfault.htm

i've also found a site which sells them to the UK £52 though....hmmmm! it has to be done i suppose!

well i'll keep you guys updated and thanks
