Title: <IMPORTANT> Before Skeets leaves the building --->NOW!
Post by: Skeets on July 31, 2009, 02:05:56 PM
Okay so...before I leave this forum I'd just like to thank a lot of you for your help and support. This forum is great and the wiki is great. My bike was totalled and I'm getting $4,300 from the insurance including my $500 deductable.

Just a quick question for you all. They want to sell it back to me for $1200. I told them I don't want to ride it anymore but might fix it up and sell it. What you think? They said the swingarm might be bent..But I don't know!

Here is the beloved gear:

I'd take the money and get a another bike. You're not gonna make money fixing it up since your bike will have the stigma of the salvage title and resale valure will be cut drastically. The only reason to buy it back is to fix it up for riding yourself and pocketing the difference. And Dang! Totalled at only 6700 miles and I believe down 3 times previously and wanting to upgrade to a bigger bike. Good luck.

I guess, it's winter in a few months and I don't have a garage so yeah...I'm letting go of her.

Man, I'd take the cash.  You can get a nice bike for that kinda money.  Best of luck with whatever you decide to do, I'm sorry to hear about the accident.

you said at a red light? i'm surprised there isn't more damage to the bike then if you were sitting still.

Kiddo, swingarm send me 20 bucks and shipping, however it has been painted by hand with POR15 and hardnose with brush ... Looks like a hammer finish paint job really.

That bike aint nothing but 20 mins away from rolling down the road with the best of them.
Garage - screw that, rent a storage space, get it over there and fix it in 1 weekend.

Cool.

with all the scratches and cracks it looks like you got sucked into a tornado. good work on staying alive while that happened.

I say take the money and get a bike with anti-dive. anti-dive is addictive.

Kinda like when I got hit on my bicycle.  Probably going like 30 down a hill on the shoulder when some douchebag in a black Cadillac came flying past, catching my handlebar on the side of his car, twisting the handlebars, stuffing the other handle into my stomach flipping me over the front of my bike onto the pavement.  It was like, mid-december and I was wearing a hoodie and athletic shorts, no helmet, no gloves.  I just got scraped up a bit and some clothing rips.  The fcuker didn't even touch his breaks and just kept going.

Anyway, I'm glad to hear that you're alright, man.  I'm still saying take the money and find a nice bike.  If you're feeling confident, maybe invest some of the money to hopefully get some return and just buy before the next riding season.

Yeah, $1200 is a cool deal if you bought a new swingarm and right engine cover, and just ride it around naked, but if you were going to resell it, you're definitely not going to make any more money than you put into it, and would still have to deal with the hassle of selling it. Just don't get suckered into the same game I did buying a bike that cost more, and thinking you'd send in the rest of the money with the next payment, it won't happen. Buy a new helmet and jacket first, figure out how much insurance is gonna cost you, and then buy a bike with what you have left so you're done with it.

My dad said no buying it back. He said no need to..Riding season is over and you're getting a Ducati next summer. So no need for her. I'm actually sad that she's going to be going to an auction and probably sold for parts. UGH.

I see MD plates there.  Riding season isn't over!!!!   But yeah it doesn't sound like it would be worth the hassle at $1200.  You could probable get an older gs with a clean title that wasn't busted up for that much.

That's a damn shame. I hate seeing a crashed Duc. I know they aren't super rare, but they are definitely special. It's a shame you won't give it the respect it deserves.

That's true, with other bikes you can pull them from a crash and still often have a good running engine to start a streetfighter. You crash a ducati and you take away it's nice clean looks, and it can no longer be used as a driveway/garage ornament, it's a complete loss.

Not only that, but when you bust up a Japanese bike, you can rebuild it, and despite the rough looks, it still looks pretty cool. A bit of street cred. A messed up Ducati just look poor, and is basically relegated to being ragged on either by ANOTHER newbie (who will also crash it) or ragged on by an experienced rider at the track, where it will also inevitably end up crashed. Ducatis - No matter what happens, they eventually get crashed.

if you really want to ride her again:
1 new (ok, used, from gstwins) swingarm = $30 or 40 shipped
2 rip the plastics off. all of them.
3 sell the headlight for $100+ on ebay
4 put a can o tuna over the pickup on the right side
5 ride it

#2 is the most important. really, the plastics are all that's hurt. once they're gone you'll see how tough she is.

IF YOU DON"T CARE:

1 why didn't you sue the ass hat that hit you ? we're talking 10-15,000 easy from their insurance !
2 let the insurance company keep her, since you'll be down $1700 to buy her back, plus the salvage title (crap to try and sell) including your deductable.
3 save your pennies for that newer-ish bike this winter... hint, buy in the winter, sell in the summer !

glad you're still breathing. that was a hit ! :)

Because supposedly they "left the scene".

Or beacuse he just crashed it and made up the story about being hit so he wouldn't look like a total noob. Believe whichever you like.

When you buy a bike back from the insurance company, they usually won't salvage title it. When my GS got totaled out I bought it back (for $600 or $800, I forget) and still maintained the clear title.

My insurance said if I buy it back I get a salvage title. Funnily enough at this situation...I paid 4200OTD for it new and I'm getting more for it.. Weird.

If my bike gets disappeared I'll get more from insurance than it cost me. That's because insurance pays Full Retail and it didn't cost me full retail.

Yeah, I've seen road rash before. I don't believe you got that from getting sideswiped while sitting at a light.

You crashed it.

if you take off the plastics, the damage really doesn't look like it's that extensive in the pics IMO.

so, this person side-swiped you while running a red light and nobody saw it? i mean, witnesses i would think would have been able to at least give a make and model. a little data searching would come up with makes and models in your area.(can narrow it down better with a few tag numbers). u said infinity right? can't be that many around. i don't see many around here. then you just gotta narrow it down to the one with all the damage on the side that hit ya.  :thumb:

Riding season is never over!!!!
I was back on the back within two days of my last crash with a 1-foot bandage on my knee and a couple over the counter paint pills.
It sucks that you won't be able to ride for like 8 months just because "riding season is over"

+1  To riding until the ice coats the roads. :thumb:
But I think it's probably a good idea for Skeets to relax for a bit, think over his options, and develop a plan.  It's a shame he's gonna miss out of plenty of riding yet this season, but it's probably a good idea now.  Lose one riding season now, have many for more to come, you know?  It's a tough choice for anyone I guess.

If you'd like you can have the whole bike for $1400. lol. Everything belongs to the insurance company now!
