Title: A in dept question on adjusting chain slack

 In my haynes manual  when it states to adjust chain,  all i need to do is loosen 1 thing.  Taking the pin out and loosening the rear nut bolt for the wheel.  Then you go ahead and adjust the screw on the back of the swingarm.

I noticed something odd, when i decided to replace my chain.   I actually had to loosen the bolt on the brake torque arm securing it to the caliper.  If you don't loosen this bolt, well, no matter how much you tighten or loosen the screw on back for chain tension on the right side where the brake is, the right side wont budge.

By this observation if this is correct, All i have been doing really when thinking i was adjusting my chain tension was moving the left side (sprocket side) in or out.  While it does adjust the tension, it misaligns my wheel at the same time, since in reality i never really adjusted the left side. :cookoo: The torque arm screw being tied ensured that side never moved. Thus the issue with squeeking?

So am i right in my observation..that you really need to loosen 2 bolts when doing you chain adjustment? The rear wheel nut and the  bolt on the brake torque arm.

ohgood, you may have misread my post. I have no problem with aligning my wheels. I actually use the gun site method tought to me by suzuki steveo. works great.  I am just stating that i think you need to have 2 bolts loosened as oppose to 1 when adjusting the chain.

I just adjusted my chain several days ago. All that was needed was to remove the pin and loosen the left side. From there it was easy to adjust both sides to move the rear wheel.

It's generally pretty easy to move the axle back in the swing-arm when tightening a stretching chain, because the adjustment device pulls it back but does not push it forward.  You will probably have an easier time moving the axle forward if the torque arm bolts are loosened.  Realistically, those bolts should be free to move a little bit to begin with, as they are safetied with cotter pins and shouldn't rely on torque to stay fastened.

ok, i've read it thrice now, without kids screaming for a change :)

yes, you do need loosen both the adjusters when you're taking up the slack in the chain/adjusting the wheel alignment. cool, you have a alignment method that works, as a bonus :)

i'm not really sure what you're saying about the right side being "tied" ? i guess you meant 'tight', ok, it still shouldn't matter when you're adjusting the chain tension or adjusting alignement. if the caliper is binding (from poor alignment) against the disc, i could see that being a problem, ya.

sorry if i misread or misinterpreted. it happens allot ;)

I just adjusted mine. I loosened the wheel bolt and tightened both adjusting bolts a bit. I too read the manual and it says to only do the left side. I did the right side also just to even it out.
