Title: so many questions from this newbie !
Post by: Hondatwo on August 07, 2009, 12:57:30 AM
Hi all,

great & informative forum you have going here. :thumb:

My  name is Stu & i am fro  the land of Oz.....road ride a 2006 'naked' (used to be faired until several mishaps by another rider  >:()....what a hoot ! LOL

Soooo many questions for you all, but wanna keep this real simple, so one step at a time.

I know there are a squillion tyre questions etc on forum, have been thru a bucket load....but I am after a simple answer to this question if you can help me......

It is clear that we can run a 140 tyre on the rear rim of our bikes......so tell me this please, is there any benefit in doing this....or should we just stay with our 130 & run a good sports tyre ?

Is running a 140 NOT as beneficial as sticking with the 130 ?

I need new tyres, which way to go ?   130 or 140 rear tyre ?

Now, the same question also applies to the front......110 or 120 front tyre ?   Which is best & why ?

Cheers

PS...only used for road riding, but I do push her hard   :icon_mrgreen:

only benny to goin wider in the rear is to open up the options for sticky tires.  you wont find great stick race type sport tires in a 130 or even a 140.  from what i have found.

Have you found the OE type tyres to be insufficient for your use?  If not, moot issue.  There may be a down side to larger tyres; such as less nimble slow speed manuevers (parking lot drills), greater unsprung weight, maybe a tad less top end speeeeeed.  Might cost more too.  But, if fatter tyres makes you grin, then enjoy life!

I have a rear wheel swap that allows the use of a 160 rear tire, but never found the 130 or 140 insufficient.  I like the way it looks with the wider rear tire, and I am willing to push the bike harder in turns with the better tires offered in the 160 class.  if I were to choose between the 130 or 140, I would go with the 140 though, as it looks a little better on the bike

yeah i wasnt saying there arent stikies in the stock size just saying you may get more options with a wider tire.  as for price i went to the 160 with the kat rear wheel swap and total i have 210 into tires and rear wheel swap.  My main reason for going bigger was only for looks altho i am using almost every MM of the 150 that i put on the back of my bike.

Ok, good stuff....

so in brief, using a 140 will only make the bike look better (personal opinion of course), & there may be a few more choices in tyre types.

But the 140 rear WILL NOT improve the bikes handling etc in any way .....corrrect?  :)

Well you might get a wider contact patch, and it will change the geometry a bit (depending on profile).  I chose to get a wider tire in hopes of getting longer life out of the tires - the OEMs on mine lasted only 7500 miles  >:( .  Also they look better (not as good as a 160+ of course) than the stock.

I put 150/70s on my stock rims (requires a small amount of modification) and I think I have a higher top speed due to the circumference increase.

Ok, so I should stay with a 130 rear then !  :)

Now, the same question also applies to the front......110 or 120 front tyre ?   Which is best & why ?    Is there any advantage to using a 120 instead of the current 110 ?

Cheers

Thanks Josh  :thumb:

Next question....if I was to buy a full exhaust system from the USA....where is the best place to buy from ?

Systems in Oz are waaaaay overpriced, so it is worth buying in the USA while our $$$ is stronger, & having it sent over.

The biggest benifit is a lower RPM at highway speeds. The 140 is a taller tire which changes your final drive ratio. Putting the 140 on the back of mine lowered 60 mph cruise speed from 5300 to 5000 and improved fuel ecomony by 5% (what E10 gas took away). It does take away a little on the bottom (take off) but it doesn't bother me a bit.

Stay with the standard size tyres and get either Pirelli sport demons or Metzler Lasertecs. I've just gone from Pirellis to Metzlers.
