I got the 14 tooth sprocket and installed it. Had to remove a link but my chain was long anyway.
It is a great mod that makes the bike feel like it is in the right gear more often. I was always bogging down with the 16 tooth sprocket in second gear mostly. Taking a corner in second used to suck because sometime you almost wanted to down shift to first. Now it feels right.
It does rev a bit higher which gets you into the power band faster.
Highway speeds were no problem. I went 90mph and still had plenty of tac left so I am sure I could 100mph if needed. I don't need a bike to go any faster than 100mph.
news flash there isnt a power band on the gs500 its a 4 stroke and they dont have power bands only 2strokes do. :thumb:
Well it gets you into the higher RPMs faster which is the sweet spot for the power.
I did run into one problem. The sprocket Bike Bandit sent me was the wrong one. They sent me a JTF-512.14. That is the sprocket for the newer GS500s like my wife's 2007. I am not sure what the JT# for the 1994 version is but it is in the other thread about 14 tooth sprockets. I wanted it on my bike today so I ground it down enough to fit. The only difference is there is about a 1mm of extra metal on the face of the gear. I ground that down and it fit fine. I called Bike Bandit before I ordered to make sure I had the right part but they still messed up. That was the first and last time I order from them.
I've placed one order with Bike Bandit. They totally screwed that order up. They can blow me.
From the wiki:
1988 to 1993 = No flange on Sprocket (Part# JTF 565)
1994 to 2007 = Flange on Sprocket (Part# JTF 516)
I too have only placed one order from Bikebandit and they messed it up =/
discounthondaparts.com uses the same format as bikebandit its all motorcycle parts and they are cheaper.....might be worth checking out.
yeah, I've got the 14t on mine, but I changed the rear from 39t stock up to 47t, and I can still hit 95. You should still be good for 105-110 on yours, but I feel the same way, no real need for speeds over 100 unless you're willing to take the trouble that comes with it.

all engines have a powerband, check out the definition of powerband :thumb:

woot ^^^^
yes every engine has a power band. it's the rev range in which the engine performs best. in other words, you should shift at the top of it, and you next gear starts at the bottom of it, hopefully
BEFORE this turns into ANOTHER stupid pissing contest, and as much as I'd rather just ignore this thread, I tend to think that joshr08 was making a JOKE there. MOST of us know that engines are designed to have a powerband of SOME type, even slow-revving (700 RPM max) diesel ship engines, so let's not allow this to get out of hand. I've read enough of his posts over the years to know that josh didn't fall off a watermelon truck yesterday, and he isn't a 17 year-old know-nothing big-mouthed wise-ass, so shake hands, and we'll all pretend we learned something we didn't already know about engines today.
HOWEVER, if you'd rather fight about this, then go to your corners, wait for the bell, and come out swinging. Of course, if THAT happens, I'll be the FIRST one to ask the mods to ban BOTH of you, and anyone else who chooses to get into the middle of this.
Some of you know that I spent a good part of my life in the military, and I'd probably STILL be on active duty if I hadn't developed some serious health problems several years ago. OK, so maybe I'm too old for active duty now, but my kid brother is in Iraq, and he'll be FIFTY soon... and I'd give ANYTHING to turn back the clock and join him there. Yes, I've already been to the big sand pile, but so has my brother; I'd just like to be there to watch his back this time, knowing he's watching mine.
Take this as friendly advice from someone who's been around the track a few times; we can educate one another without disrespecting or insulting anyone. I actually laughed when I read the comment joshr08 made about the GS powerband; hey josh, if you think four-stroke twins don't have a powerband, try riding a four-stroke single some day. You can time the power strokes with a sundial! Still, I'm proud to be a Thumperhead; there's a special place in my heart for big (four-stroke) singles, and I'll eventually build my dream thumpersickle... someday...
If you guys can't be friendly for some reason, then at least be civil to one another; it beats the dogsh*t out of being enemies... Lastly, let's keep the mods OUT of these threads, unless they're needed for a GOOD reason. Some of the mods have hair-triggers on their ban-hammers, and I don't want to see anyone else get banned from here, unless they REALLY fsck up...
I just let the no powerband comment above pass but I've been commenting on the GS500 power band of approx 7-9000 rpm for 10 years and 150k GS500 miles. You can make the best time when riding in a spirited manner by keeping it in the 7-9k range and going much over 9k is non productive on a stock GS500 even though it's redlined at 11k, dropping to the next gear from 9k puts you back on top of the torque curve. A good job of jetting with intake and exhaust mods will extend the range up another 1k or so but seems hardly worth the price to me for a 10% at best power increase. I even took the time to calculate the speed in mph for the 7-9k power band with stock 16T compared to 14T front sprockets for comparison purposes.

arguing or not, if something that looks wrong and is not identified as a joke is written, it should be corrected to assure accuracy in the archives so that new people searching don't stumble across it and get mis informed. none of the corrections were argumentative. if it was a joke, than the corrections just act to have it identified as so. not a big deal. ban me if you like...
Calling someone a fool sounds a little arguementative to me. Still looks to be done in humor considering he also ended his post with a :thumb:, unless that was meant to be sarcastic as well. Fighting sarcasm with Sarcasm makes my head hurt.

Hey KasbeKZ, what made you think anything I wrote was directed at YOU? I don't have any problems with your post, and it seems clear that it didn't bother gsJack, so allow me to clarify my previous comment:
When I mentioned banning "...BOTH of you...", I was referring to joshr08 and jeremy_nash, since one of them used the word "foolish" when referring to the other one, and I don't want them to begin sniping at one another.
Your post was clear and to the point; I also try to keep from confusing the newbies. Too much misinformation gets posted as "truth"; I've been riding street for half my life now, so I try hard to get the facts straight. Now that I think about it, I probably should have quoted those two posts, so you'd know that nothing I wrote was directed at you; sorry about the oversight.
You and I shouldn't have any problems here; from my perspective, we're on the same wavelength... You made a clear, consise point, as did gsJack; I'm just trying to keep the squabbling to a minimum these days. Wladziu got banned recently, and I don't want to see it happen to anyone else. I hereby apologize to you for any misunderstanding my remarks caused...
noober
Seriously, Can we just talk about bikes? I want my 30 seconds of reading back! :whisper:

I heard if you put a teaspoon of your own blood in the carburetors, your bike will gain 15hp. True story. You gain 25hp if it's someone else's blood.

it's all good thanks for the clarification.
I didnt mean it as an insult, it just puzzles me everytime I hear someone say only 2strokes have a powerband, plus I was drunk when I made the post. josh, I didn't mean any disrespect, and I truly apologize if you or anyone else takes it that way! I will also edit my above post, so that nobody thinks I'm just a jerk!

That is correct for my 1994. Not sure about other years. The newer ones have the "ledge" on the face which is about 1/8" thick. I had to grind that down with a 6" bench grinder in 95 degree heat in my brother's garage. I could have waited and sent the old sprocket back and got the right one but Bike Bandit took FOUR days just to ship my order and then it took another 5 days to get to me! On top of that, they screwed up my order. I am going to call them today and see WTF was up with that.
Spoke with Bike Bandit via the online help thing. They admitted that they have the wrong part number and they messed up sending me the wrong one. They are sending me the right part. I told them I didn't need it as I ground down the metal ledge myself and installed it. They insisted because they think I should have the right part.
So, when it gets here, I will have any extra 14 tooth sprocket. If anyone wants it, $20.00 shipped and it is all yours. It is a great mod and is the best $20 I have ever spent on a bike. Just makes it feel tighter and in the right gear all the time. No more bogging down in second gear as you take a slow corner. When you give it some gas in 6th, it actually responds instead of just lagging.
kgriggs8@yahoo.com
dont you think 20 shipped is a bit much seeing that your actually getting it for free and its not 20 bucks new?
Yeah, I bought mine at the dealer $17.87 :thumb: Ordered on a Saturday they had it on Wednesday!

Not really. It is $16.06 plus $5.95 shipping from Bike Bandit. You still save money and don't have to mess with trying to find the right part number and order the wrong part. It is quick and easy, if all you need is the front sprocket and want to do the mod, send me an e-mail and I will send you the sprocket.
Considering that Bike Bandit screwed me over, I deserve to sell the part. They should have refunded my money but since they didn't, I am selling the sprocket to get my money back.
I was going to ship it via USPS Priority the day I got the money. I waited 8 days to get my sprocket but you can have this sprocket in 2-3 days and be sure it is the right one. Sounds like a great deal to me.
If you want to save a few bucks, I will ship it via 1st class and it will only be $17
Hey Joshr08,
I just noticed that you have made two stupid comments in my thread. I also noticed that someone tried to defend you but but you just proved them wrong.
Looks like you really are a tard. I was giving you the benefit of the doubt but now I see you are a trouble maker. Not sure what your deal is but you are a nobody who knows nothing. You don't impress anyone. Feel free to never respond to my threads in the future because I can't imagine you have anything worth reading to post. Just go play some video games and let the adults talk for a while.

I demand, Sir, that you keep your tone more civil before our newly self appointed etiquette Gestapo demands your immediate ban.
Other, better behaved people, will decide for you whether 20 bucks is too much money.
if anyone see's fit to ban me then do it dont toy with the idea. :thumb: have a good day.
Bye. :cookoo:
+1 on Josh 08 being an asshat. If you don't know what you're talking about, don't pretend.....
im just glad to see we can call people names like we are in the 3rd grade. :woohoo:
