Title: dangerous time to be riding
Post by: Zarathustra on October 07, 2003, 10:20:15 AM
i recently started lifting weights again since i'd completely stopped since last fall.  however, back then i had a weight bench in my house, it was nice and easy.  now, my new place is too small so i ride my bike to the rec center on campus.  but man, nothing like hoping on a bike and riding home after you've just worked out and feel about as strong as a kitten.  i almost dropped my bike once, and coming out of a stopped light my leg didn't want to lift onto the pegs.  anyone else have this problem?  i suppose i coul dride the bus, but i don't want to be doing that.

mostly i have trouble shampooing my hair after a good workout.  i can imagine my arms not holding me up and falling face first on the tank.

I know what you're talking about. I work out 5 days a week and ride there just about every time. I try to give myself a little time before I hop on the bike. Rest for like 30 min or so, get a little strength back. Also, once you get back into shape your muscles will recover faster and you'll be alright.

That's hilarious!
I don't work out as much as I should anymore but even after that initial adrenaline rush from a good workout, it would be hard for me to imagine hopping on the bike right away in full force...then again, what am I talking about? If I do work out, I work out at home...

That's an interesting problem.. never thought of that one.  I've been going to the gym for years religously and I haven't felt completely exhausted after a workout in ages.  Unless you're new (or just getting started again) or trying to get HUGE, you shoulnd't bee too tired to operate a motorcycle.

I used to have a similar problem with things like taking a flight of stairs after a leg workout or working in the lab after doing a heavy chest workout, but now that I'm totally over the get-as-huge-as-possible phase of my exercise life, I lift a sane amount (with good form), always run or do cardio of some kind after, and by the time I'm ready to leave the gym, i'm feeling stronger than when I arrived  :thumb:   not to mention that I'm stronger than I ever was when I was doing super-sets  ;)

I'm not sure if you're looking for advice or just ranting, but if you are looking for advice, here's what i would say:  Are you just lifting, or do you hop on the treadmill each time, too?  if not, try ending your workout with a little cardio to get the lactic acids flushed out and give your muscles a few minutes to recover from the strength training.  I know it does me a world of good.

peace

the main problem is that i jst started to lift again.  i used to lift 3 times a week religously with my old roomate, but stopped that last winter.  so i just starte dup again, so my muscles are getting sore easier.  i hop on a bike when i get there for around 20 minutes, then do my lifting, then hop back on a bike for about half an hour.  i think what killed me was doing squats, and maybe the military press.  i was beat afterwards.  today my shoulders and thighs are still a bit sore.  but yeah, since i stopped lifting and exersizing i put on a bit of weight, so i'm trying to get rid of that, and no sense in not building more muscle either.  :thumb:  so as soon as i get past this break-in stage again i'll be lifting pretty heavy to get some more size (yeah, just what a 6'3'' 220 lb man needs, more size).  hopefully though it won't compromise my riding too much.  it's probably just me getting back into it, and my body being pissed off that i let it sit for so long.
